Links vs Parkland

I love the way a links course looks as you look out over it and i am yet to come across one that has not been pleasing on the eye. I often think it is more the way the game should be played. On the other hand i love the way a on a parkland course how the trees lne the fairway they generally have large greens and the grass is very lush. but unless you go to a more well known course sometimes the condiditon can be suspect.

Which do you prefer???

I Play parkland 3 or 4 times a week and its the hardest golf around hitting a drive 250 then finding it wedged against a tree is frustrating,or hitting it into leaves and not being able to find it.However it helps with the short game and it helps with course management.I also play links in Ilfracombe every other friday and i love it,open faiways nicer greens and much better lies,if i had a choice it would be links everytime for me .

Links for me, even tho my courss isn't links i still prefer it but played a lot this year at Downfield a cracking parkland course and loved playing Muckhart and Letham Grange in the Forum meets both parkland.
But nothing beats playing a links course hitting it 200 yards one hole then the next cant hit the same club 120 yards,purgatory in a way but great.

Too tough of a decision.

I see links as the clssic way golf should be played but am a member at a parkland and joining another parkland course however i am a lover of links golf courses.

I love the wind and the openess about its hit it pure or non at all

Steve I still chuckle at IM02 telling me the story of your pal asking him what he had hit at the 150 yard 15th when you played at Goswick..the hole was into a hurricane......'4 iron' came the reply.....'I best put away my 8 iron then' said you pal!! Priceless.....links golf at its best!

Swings and roundabouts isnt it? You can;t say which is best as they both have their own challenges.

Thats all the iron in his Guiness mate ,Ivan stuck a 4 iron to a couple of feet ,i hit rescue and Paddys got his 8 iron out thinking i could get there with this he's a legend, i think he might be coming on here .

If it came down to it I would probably say links for the tradition, the quality of the turf and greens, the constantly changing conditions etc. That said, I'm glad I don't play all my golf at a links and my club is parkland. The great attraction of this game is playing different courses all over the place and to just play one type would take a lot away. A great course is a great course and a poor one is a poor one whatever the style.

Difficult as I've never played a links course.
But I've gone on record on here saying that I don't get links golf. I appreciate the traditions etc etc but links courses, to me, just look like a wilderness. Bleak, unwelcoming and that's in summer. And not knowing whether you're going to hit your 6 iron 160 or 200 or 100 yards just doesn't compute.

Both. Living where I do (at least 60 miles from the coast) its rare that I get the opportunity to play muh links. When I do its always fun and a challenge to hit 130 yard 5 irons no more than 20 feet in the air in the face of a howling wind. Whilst there is generally a bit more room off the tee and the rough isn't as penal (unless you carve it into the sandhills), the penalty for missing a fairway and finding a pot bunker is almost equal to playing three off the tee for a lost drive on a parkland track. The links greens are usually a challenge too in terms of speed and subtlety of breaks.

That said I love the challenge of a tight inland course where driving well is a premium and the penalty in terms of difficult lies for missing a green can be severe.

I vastly prefer Heathland to Parkland...

Scotscraig,Panmure,Sherwood Forest,Royal Doddington all fine heathlands.

Heathland is acceptable!!!

thought about it but those courses (though good) are not as well known as the links/ parkland.

The only real links course I've played is at my Brothers, Whalsay golf club on the Shetlands. Although I really enjoyed playing there, much prefer Parkland, and believe me, it's not only windy on a links course. I appreciate wind is a bigger factor on links, almost as much as, trees,ditches,bushes,lakes,ponds,telegraph poles and even cows being herded alongside a fairway
