Links Admiration

I would agree that playing links golf teaches you to be a more complete golfer, and that you come across a wider array of obsticles and playing conditions, therefore you need to be able to play a wider array of shots. So it would follow that links golfers should be better than a golfer who plays parkland to the same handicap, this is not always the case though.
 
I'm sorry but as a lover of parkland golf conditions I dont see how a links golfer is supposed to be better equiped to handle them. I consider myself a well rounded golfer and can hit it both ways with irons or woods. I can hit it low and running or cut a high one up. You have to be able to hit over/round/under trees/bushes etc

Links is just a big open space with some rough. Dont tell me it gets windy cos it gets bloomin' windy inland too you know. All I ever see links golfers do is knock in low shots with some run. Variety ? no

I have no problem playing links , however it bores the pants off me so I stay away as much as possible unless theres a big comp on. Featureless , boring golf and doesnt give you a rounded golfing game IMO :p

When there is no wind the courses dont have much defense except big greens , parkland still has its big trees and blind doglegs etc

Absolute Rubbish.
We played Carnoustie one day on a trip up to Scotland, my mate (who plays almost all of his golf on parkland courses) just stood on the tee and smashed the ball as far as he could. He missed loads of fairways but in doing so he took most of the courses defences, the bunkers, out of play.
He had a fantastic round, top scorer of the day.
Try playing a 6,500 yard parkland course during the wetter months when you are getting no run on the ball and are having to hit 3 wood second shots into par 4's, whilst having to clear bunkers, ponds etc.
One of the beauties of playing links golf, even during the winter months, is the amount of run you get on the ball. You very rarely get a plugged ball in the fairway on a links course, but during the winter it's an occupational hazard on a parkland course.
 
Smithy take your points but i think saying absolute rubbish is a bit harsh!

They are to completely different types of the game and neither is better than the other.

You may think it is an advantage to be able to get run on links course in the winter but i would to take aim at the flag on the green and have the balls stop dead at it.

I think we are all lucky we play agame that has so much variety cos at the end of the day no course and no day weather wise are the same!!

Anyway its great to see such a wide variety of answers and opinions on the forum thats what i love about coming in from work and switching on the laptop...
And thats what makes the game so appealing... You'll never keep all of the people happy all of the time
I hope i can go back to playing that same course again next year after iv learned some of my trade on my own course.

Blah blah blah - Read my previous I said its not always the case

and yes I have played a lot of parkland golf and I think (yes my opinion not stating fact) Links golf makes you a better golfer, how many times on a parkland course do you have to hit a knock down 5iron from 100yrds.

I guess anyone who plays Parkland is not going to agree but it is easier.
 
Nope, the knock down 5i from 100 isn't going to be used much on parkland, but then on links you aren't going to be hitting the low slider out from under the trees.

Both are a different test. The best golfers will master both.

My belief is that I can get round either without significantly altering the way I play.

You can play that shot as many times as you like around a parkland course. Nothing forces you to go flat out for the pin with a high shot everytime.
I think it's rubbish to say that a 12 handicapper from a links course is likely (likely) to be a better golfer than a 12 handicapper from a parkland background though.

In normal conditions you can - on a very windy day a links would eat you alive

And you have to hit low sliders both ways on a good links course

Home and Away ie. 1 on links chosen by the links team, and 1 match on a parkland course chosen by the parkland team.

It's not really a hornets nest , we all have our opinions and most of us are adult enough to expess them without getting personal. Thats why we come on here , to talk about golf and all things related to it and have a good old discussion.

A lot of stuff is said tongue in cheek cos you know you'll get a reaction , just like real life tbh ;)
