Morning all,
I'm just about to start planning our spring "tour". 4 capable golfers, nothing too fancy. We play a clay based parkland course, so always looking for seaside/ heathland stuff on our hols to mix it up from our regular diet.
We've been working our way down the East Coast, and have landed in Lincolnshire this year.
My thought is to base ourselves in Skeggy and play North shore and Seacroft. I'm looking to add a 3rd course for variety. Ordinarily, I'd try one of the Woodhall Spa options, but one of our number had an unhappy day there on the main course being chased around by marshals and cannot be persuaded to return. How is the 2nd course? Or are there other options less than 30 mins from skeg? Have seen Market Rasen described as "heathy", any opinions on this, or anywhere else?
Also, re Skeggy, is there a nice "old town" but which is nice to stay in?
Tia,
D.

How about somewhere like Blankney ?

Or Spalding ?

The second course is nice at Woodhall but not a patch on Hotchkin

When we play the swing there we stayed in Horncastle

This year we are staying at North Shore

Thanks.
Have you stayed at the North shore before? How is it?
We normally take a decent sized house, but did wonder about this.
Will look up the other 2.

We haven’t stayed there before - we are normally in Horncastle but have been told the hotel at North Shore is nice

This is where we used to stay and it’s nice

We have stayed and played at North Shore for one night for each of the last two years, and are in the process of booking up again for next year, but for two nights this time. The hotel while being nothing to right home about is clean and functional, which is all we need as golfers. We always play Seacroft two, as we get complemenatary golf through our club being part of the 1895 club. This year we are also adding in an the Spring Open on the Hotchkin.

I've also played Market Rasen a couple of times, it is heathland in nature and a track definately worth playing.

If you want a third course not too far from Skeggy but don't want to play Woodhall, I'd recommend Waltham Windmill or Laceby Manor (both near Grimsby so about 1hr from Skeg), or Kenwick Park near Louth (34 mins from Skeg), although none of them would really fit your 'heathy' brief. Louth would be a much nicer place to stay though. Skeggy doesn't have a nice bit - it is 100% crap. I say this as a yellowbelly who has visited hundreds of times, I'm yet to find a decent pub. North Shore hotel is OK though.
Market Rasen is a real hidden gem but it's about an hour from Skeg.

Haha
Slightly disappointed to find that Skeggy is not Hunstanton in disguise... especially as it has 2 of the courses we're looking to play. Will crack open Airbnb.
And for info, we stayed in Hartlepool last year (in the old bit on the headland), so we're used to slightly dangerous ;-)

Don’t be so rude about my homeland 😂

Golf wise I’ve only ever played Woodhall
spa both courses up that way. I know I’m
In a minority but I find the Hotchkin extremely dull as a course and the more I’ve played the more I’ve confirmed that to myself. The Bracken is again in my opinion very average and very much just back and forth with a few sloping greens.

As for where to stay if you want up market you might want to avoid SkegVegas 🤣 there’s quite a fun cocktail bar on the front but other than that you might be disappointed.

Not wanting to Chuck a spanner in the works, but I think your doing it the wrong way round.

We stayed at Kenwick Park. The course is Good but the hotel and food was very good. Market Rasen is a very good course. I loved it. I would play Kenwick the first day, travel to seacroft the second day, play Market Rasen the third day and go straight home from there.
Skeggy has been done up, it is still a dump.

Edit to say, looks like Louth has some nice pubs as well. 👍

Do you mean Seahouses? I'm guessing it's a typo but I don't know Lincs

Thanks all. Lots to work with.
As it happens, we stayed in Seahouses a couple of years back, and while I agree it's a great place to play and as a base for a trip, I think we'll give it a miss this time... 😉

Apropos not much, the English East Coast from Northumberland downwards has loads of great value golf trip destinations. Maybe the only good value coastal golf left in the UK. Plus, for spring trips, the weather is far better than the west side of the country.
