Just wondering how many people on here have never had lessons?

I'm 32 now and with the exception of a 4yr gap I've played since I was 14. I'm currently going the right way in terms of handicap, largely down to being able to play more frequently and I've never had a lesson. I've seen the benefit of lessons from some mates who started a few years ago but I think if I were to start tweaking things now it may have an adverse effect because I'm sure any Pro would have field day pointing out faults in my swing.

Your Thoughts?

People normally have lessons to improve certain parts of their game they're not happy with. Short game, long game cure my slice etc.
If you are happy with your game, dont have a lesson. :)
If you're having a specific problem then do. :)

The only problem I'm having at the minute is getting beat on countback (4 times this year), doubt a Pro could fix that ;)

LOL... actually it looks from your forum sig that you have 7.7 little problems at the moment :) :D :p

ONly ever had a free 1/2 hour lesson when I first joined a club in '93.
Had a few tips and hints over the years but no formal lessons.

I had a course of 6 lessons about 15 years ago. I really liked the way my swing was going, and thought it was worth every penny.

Then I found the limiting factor on my improvement was staying behind the shot, rather than looking for the ball before I hit it.

I figured that once I had sorted this out, then I would be back for some more lessons, as any more until then was a waste of time. Same old mistake, every time.

I am still waiting.

Poor Golf - no frustration - no need for lessons

Poor Golf - frustration - maybe lesson could help

Simple!!

Frustrated due to all my shots going left of target and would/could not believe the simple error until I had the video evidence laid in front of me by the pro. Problem solved.

Putted so badly for so many years and assumed I was just a bad putter, did not have a lesson - silly me - saw Bob's teach-in and hey presto again, problem solved! I wish Bob had come into my putting life many years ago!!

Never had one. Read a lot of instruction over the years, enough to know I have a rediculously strong grip and swing too fast anyway. Working on the speed but any other grip just feels so wrong. I get it round though and enjoy it - mostly.

Had a lesson for the first time in over 15 years a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't to get the instruction as such, but more to have someone else view the changes I had made myself and tell me whether I am doing the right things with those changes.

I was cursed with the Colonel Piper's and 45* low right was the only shot I could hit. Made some big changes (for me) in my posture and takeaway which got me swinging on a much better plane. Now just learning to trust being able to release the club down the line instead of trying to hold everything off by pulling the club across my left hip with the face open.

Changes are a long winded process to ingrain, never being able to trust your swing because of small changes brought in from constant lessons would spoil my enjoyment of the game.

Sorry but I disagree. To my mind, getting a lesson if a problem comes into your game is the simplest way to getting it fixed and something that works regularly. If you hit a s***k it can be caused by a number of things so how do you go about finding out which is right. What about missing putts or distance control out of bunkers. Its a minefield for average golfers when we're playing well so once things go wrong how do you diagnose the cause and pick the right solution unless you seek professional advice

I could never play the game without some kind of outside help.

I understand the basic theory of the game, and can read all the books and watch the videos along with the best of them.

But when I start putting it into practise, I go from one extreme, through half decent application, and out the other side into the opposite extreme.

Pros all take lessons.

I'd happily have a lesson once a month to make sure I'm on the right lines, if I had the time and the money.

But I suspect that would ruin your game
