We do not have a range at our club so when the Pro gives a lesson he and the pupil jump on a buggy and go up to a remote part of the course where they can have the lesson but still keep out of the way(ish).
Anyway, yesterday I was playing the last few holes and came upon the Pro and his pupil on the 17th tee. It was a 40-something lady and they were on the red tee some 50 yards ahead and 10 or so left. I got to the tee and he waved me through. But instead of pulling to one side to give me a clear shot he continued the lesson while I set up.
I looked up and realised what was happening and backed away, expecting them to move but they didn't.
So I'm standing there like a lemon waiting for them to move and they're just not going to.
After a minute he turns round and, almost in an irritated voice, told me to play through. So i did.

Sliced it wildly as I was only too aware of their presence. I glared at them as I walked past almost wishing I'd mullered one straight through the middle of them.
I'm new at the club and he's got little idea how good or bad I am - would you have ordered me through? I'd have been well to the side before I'd have called me through.
Bloody Peasent!!

My low hook would have seen them off.

It would be an interesting one in court.

So Mr Imurg. These two people were stood in front of you, in what could be described as your flight path. And yet you still tee'd off? Is it not true that you were having a bad game, and upon seeing a female beginner you lost your temper and tee'd off. You claim that the Pro called you through. Is it not normal practice to wait until said person has moved to a place of safety? Yet you did not wait before teeing off. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

You'll be pleased to know that the above is not my opinion. In fact the Pro is a cock. But I'm just being cynical if something had of gone wrong. I would have waited and waited....If then the Pro wants to get narchy with me, I would just explain the situation. ie. Get out of my (possible) flight path.

Those exact thoughts went through my mind HH!! But I thought - He's a cock and I'm probably going to slice it into the next county so no danger really! :D

Not a good example to set by the pro. Mind you I can appreciate his problem with no range. There was no practice ground at Wimbledon Common and the rough down the left of the 2nd fairway was designated as a place you could it balls from and where the pro taught his lessons. Good in theory except:

1) From the tee you couldn't see where exactly they were standing as it was blocked by trees

2) Once you got the fairway there would be loads of balls lying there and you had to try and find yours.

In your case though the pro should have stopped the lesson for what, two minutes max while you got ready and hit. Total plonker in my book

I can't see the problem he called you through, he did'nt move to far out of the way he knew the risk he was taking. If you hit it towards them shout fore. I have played course's where tee's are near to greens and that situation is replicated frequently.

I agree they should have moved to the side a bit. At the very least watched so they could move if you hit it towards them.

It's similar to when your partner tells you (in my case because I'm skinny and don't look like I can hit very far) that you're safe to tee off and you think the group in front might be in range if you catch one right.

Cast-iron certainty to find the woods.

How long does it take a golf ball to travel 50 yards at 140 mph?
It would have been there before I could have even thought about it.

If they were only 50 yards away, could you not have wedged over them (safer shot) and then left yourself a full bloodied driver off the deck (easy peasy japanesy)?
A good golfer would have done....
:D

on a more serious note, hapless is right. had you hit them and had it gone to court you would be the one in the dock.

pro's an idiot and seriously needs a rethink.

If it was a practice round and you were on your own, maybe just move to the next tee and let them continue practicing. By the sounds of it you don't seem to encounter them alot anyway. I know am missing your point here, and you shouldn't have to skip a hole but just for the sake of it............
