Lessons... great on the day but what about after?

why is it when the pro says try this, you do it and wow instant (ish) success

you stay after the lesson hit another 50 balls and exactly the same. a few days later you go to the range or the course and you have either forgotten what he said or even worse forgotten how to swing a club

anyone had a similar experience? :D

was a general sort of post Gary, I do take notes and write down drills. Just reflecting a bit on my previous lessons and how when it clicks with the pro it feels grooved, until a few days later then its all lost in translation :)

Yep times many. When they are stood at the side of you watching you do a drill or hit balls it gives you confidence however when you go away to do it by yourself doubts kick in and thats when it usually goes pear shaped. Just think the lesson over again and you will soon be flushing them again.

My Pro emails me over a lesson summary after each one which i then transfer my scribbles onto and is good to refer back to.

In the rough makes a good point about confidence which my guys is great at instilling, it's just a case of then taking that and transferring it to both the range and course when he's not there.

Easier said than done.

My Pro sends me an email at the end of the lesson with bullet points on what we've worked on and either a vid of the swing or a still photo at impact say.

I find it really helps to get to the range as often as possible during the week after, especially if there has been any major tweeks. We've made a few major changes in the last couple of weeks for example and I've hit 1000 balls in the week after the lesson - but then I don't have a FPO!

After that it's completely grooved in time to revert to type on the first tee at the weekend :(

(not really - shot 82....but thought it might make you feel better! lol)

Going through exactly that experience myself at the moment. Had the second of a series of six lessons last Friday. Practiced on the range over the weekend - changes working well - played in a fourball on Tuesday and was dire - couldn't hit an iron shot to save my life. A lot going left and most duffed a few yards.

Third lesson of series tomorrow. Let's hope it reverses the effects of lesson 2!:fore:

My pro sends video clip, drills we've worked on and note to my Plane Truth player profile and links to further drills on the site. I tend to find I'm good for a week or so and then the quality of the strike/direction seems to deteriorate a tad. I usually get a round and a half after a lesson feeling on top of the world with the new swing before it wears off. Still with my new teacher and new one plane swing I'm positive everything is coming up Homer this year. My first lesson changes are bearing up well and although tonights lesson is moved until next week I'm still happy with how things are going

probably one of two things or a combination; you either were thinking of the mechanics too much because you had done so in practice with good effect but in practice you can hit the odd bad one and forget about it because you don't have to suffer the consequences. Or it could be you put too much pressure on yourself to have a good round because of how well practice was going and you became tight and tense especially after you hit the first bad shot of the day. Once you have practiced it is important to clear your mind and trust the changes rather than force them to be there during a round.

If i had my pro standing watching me on the course i would be a scratch player. I seem to get to a lesson and say i'm hitting it crap he goes hit some for me all perfect then back to the course and i'm crap. At the moment i'm working on 3 things slowing down my back swing and stopping at a 3/4 swing for the irons and keeping my right leg flexed its going great during lessons and on the range, but hard to keep all the swing thoughtsd out on the course.

The pro coach ,,as soon as you go to your lesson ,the first words are ,,hit a ball lets have a look at you ,,

these words puts you under a trance ,he then shows you what to do & how to do it 10 Min's later oh yes ,this is great i can't believe what a difference & how good I'm hitting the ball this is brilliant after the lesson you pay him & arrange another lesson then he says you have great hand & eye coordination

3-2-1- your back in the room ,,,you go to course or range & your worse than before

there you go hes made you happy for 30 Min's and you've payed him for the privilege for making you golf worse than it was

You're spot on, that is exactly what happens to me to

My theorey is when i'm at the lesson, im hitting good shot after shot if i slip into the old ways he's there to immediatley correct, but when i'm practicing on my own 3 days later i may think i am doing the it correctly but actually i'm not, slowily bad habits are creeping back in, which im totally oblvious to.

I reckon i'd be a bloody good golfer if i had a pro following me round on every shot gently nudging me in the right direction

If i ever win the lottery i might employ one on a full time basis :)

I'm actually going to ask if i can video my next lesson, just pop my camera down behind and let it run for the hour

I concur completely with point 1! As when I go back for my next lesson he's tweaked what I thought I'd been doing so well on my own.
Great idea for point 2 - a good way to re cap what happened while in the lesson trance!

I think the issue is you are hitting too many balls and not thinking about what you're working on - quality not quantity. I hit a bucket (50 balls) after the lesson but I'll spend ages rehearsing the swing and the drills I've been shown and trying to feel the swing and shot I've been shown. Hit a few - analyse and go back to rehearsing. It can take about 90 minutes to do the basket but I feel its time well spent. I do the same for the next few range sessions and when I hit the course I "try" and jsut swing and trust what I've done will be locked in. Sometimes it is and sometimes it ain't. On the ain't rounds just accept it and then hit the range and work on it again

Oh yes. Happened twice. First time was with a pro clearly more interested in making money to fund his next 'app'. 2nd time is happening now, walked off the course today on the 2nd hole as my errant balls were going to hurt someone. I seriously considered admitting defeat and selling my gear today.

I haven't really improved since picking up a club in November 2010, really fed up about it actually.

Having read this topic I find myself laughing and nodding at everything already said. I have been playing for less than a year and feel I am only just starting to find consistancy...

I have taught myself (very badly) how to get round a golf course and at times have done well but its been like flipping a coin. I took one lesson in the summer and thought I would be better off on my own but how wrong was I...

I have just had another lesson (Monday) and have already visited the range 3 times since to really tune in what he has taught me. I finally feel I approach each ball the same everytime and can honestly say i no longer feel i hit it and its pot luck.

I dont know about you guys but I certainly feel like he ripped apart everything i did in golf and i am already adding atleast 30 yards to most shots.

Oh and the reason for my post was... The one major thing i have taken from this is even at the range I wear my golf shoes... Im sure most of the guys on here will do anyway but anyone who thinks I wont bother, trust me you will notice a massive difference.
