Well today I had my second lesson with my new pro and things are getting frustrating but in a good way! Basically he says that my swing is bang on everything is on plane and not alot for me to work on so why am I still so bad !! I had a lesson at golf live and the instructor Paul foston didn't believe I'm a 26 hcp! Played 9 holes in the week and after 2 holes the playing partner asked if I was off 5 or 6 lol

For some reason I just can't replicate things on the course, I know I have some putting issues as per my thread in ask the experts but this doesn't equate to the high scores as much but not helping either!

Something is def wrong in my head, my pro is great and has offered to come and play with me at my course free of charge to get to the bottom of it. I'm also going to caddy for him at an event just to get a feel for what I should be doing. So all in all I can't fault him, I think it's got him baffled too lol.

So all in all I'm baffled but also in high spirits that there is good in there!

Thanks for reading just had to get it off my chest!!

Without wanting to go all boring stats guy, I think some bookkeeping on a few rounds is needed, the more detail the better to work out where it is you're losing the most strokes.

That's what he's asked me to do funnily enough, I keep them any way but sometimes sporadically. Starting with blank slate now until next lesson in 4 weeks time.

Know exactly how you feel. On the range i hit 7/10 3 woods really well off the tee and 8/10 iron shots really well.

On the course it's more like 3/10 tee shots and 4/10 iron shots.

I figure one day it just has to "click".....Surely?!

Lots of scratch golfers at the driving range.

Different story on the course. Plus, it's very hard to replicate your short game and putting at the range. That is the scoring zone.

Played a club comp today. Was hitting it nicely off the tee. Pleased with my iron play but lordy lordy!!! My short game was abysmal!!! Screwed my card completely!!!

Get your short game up to a good standard and the h/cap should come down. Still waiting for that to happen to me by the way!

A free on course lesson? WOW amazing! I love playing lessons (especially out driving my pro ;) ) I learnt so much from the 3 I have had.

The are also usually not cheap, often £30+ for a 1 hour on course lesson. I have seen some pros charge £70... £70 for them to go play 7 holes of the sport they love, have a nice chat, drive a buggy about and do a few minutes of teaching.

I think you need to forget lessons & splash out on new clubs, it seems to be working for the new shiney brigade!

I know the OP i
says he only wants to keep the stat short term and get a snapshot of where its going wrong but if he gets Scoresaver 2 (approx one off payment of £3) it really is a powerful tool. The stats literally take 10 seconds to record on the course at the same time as marking the card and a couple of minutes to download after.

It has really helped me understand where I am missing my shots on the drives, and approaches (Left and left), and there is a facility to download your stats for a given period (month, or custom dates) to give to your pro so you and he can decide to work on. You don't have to be a statto to get a lot from it

As for not replicating it on the course, the Rotella books are very good for giving you some insight into stopping the brain talking to you especially when its going well and worth a look at. However I have to agree that a playing lesson is a superb way of learning. Clearly you are swinging great, especially with all the feedback from barious playing partners, but you are doing something wrong. I'm sure the pro will be able to see something on the course and help.

Stick with it though. You ARE making progress. I was doing great in lessons too but could never translate it into scores in comps. Decent in roll ups but not with a card. Suddenly it clicked and given the new guy I've been using has giving me 100 times more confidence anyway I am starting to play well and see some real progression

Thanks guys, the great thing is not only do i get on with my coach but the lessons only cost £35 for 5 from Groupon! Lots of positives obviously have order rotellas golf is not a game of perfect, which came yesterday and the putting one! Think my biggest problem is in lessons all is nice and smooth yet on the course sometimes I can't stop myself from trying to hit it hard.

Have used the golfshot app on my phone for stats but may give the ss2 ago. Must remember to do my blog/brain dump again too.
