Inbetween my car breaking down this morning and having it taken to the garage this afternoon, I played golf.

I went out today with the sole intention of NOT trying to swing too hard at the ball. We all know that most of the time it doesn't do you any favours with the possible loss of control and increased likelihood of missing the sweet spot, but a lot of us still go for it anyway, with my weak spots being a tailwind off the tee, and thinking I've not quite got enough club for the shot without wanting to go longer and take some off.

Today I was determined that I was going to swing 'nicely' on every shot regardless of other factors.

The result score-wise wasn't outstanding (84), but I've walked off the course feeling that it's the best I've struck the ball in a few weeks.

No more greens than normal, but 10/15 fairways which is huge for me, and some very satisfying shots, the best of which was on my bogey (or double/triple) hole.
Played safe off the tee and had 210 (slightly uphill and slightly into the wind) left to the flag. Too short for the 4 wood but too long for the hybrid. Normally I'd try to hit the cover off the ball with the hybrid to get there but I accepted the fact that I'd be short or on the front of the green and just swung normally. The result was a sweetly struck shot that pitched about 15' on the green and stopped about 5' later.

So hopefully lesson learned for me, and never again will I take a mighty lash at the ball hoping for a few extra yards. (Fingers Crossed).

It might not be as much fun, but it saves getting the bottom of your trousers soaked looking for your ball in the rough!

Anyone else try to do the same, and how much success have you had?

I went out a couple of weeks ago nursing a sore back. Forced to take it nice and easy and shot -7. Definitely a lot to be said for swinging easy.

Last few months Ive started to try and slow my rhythm slightly, especially on the short and mid irons, have a tendency to be at my best when flat out but causes me big issues with distance control. Am making a big effort to have a better rhythm which gives better distance control especially with my wedges

I've been forced to hit it slower and smoother due to neck problems. Find I get much better contact and little or no lose in distance. Working on increasing my handspeed now(lag) so should finish up hitting it a lot further for less effort (well thats the plan anyway)????

my best round so far and 2nd place in the medal was after my fall off a ladder at work on the Friday, swung easy and a net 70.. ok not an outstanding score but my 1st cut of the year

was back to normal the following week :)

Region, I agree totally. Played Sunday and hit the ball sweetly with no effort, first nine holes scored 23points (42 shots, par 36), unfortunately it didn't last and finished the round with 40 points.

The only swing thought I have had this season is not to swing to hard. The whole premise of my swing is to make sure I get to a good balanced finish position at the top of the backswing. If I'm swinging to quick I can't get to a good finish position and my ball striking goes downhill. If I can get to a good finish position then I will more often than not hit a good shot.

Whenever I hit a bad patch I just go back to focusing on holding my finish - I like to call it my "Luke Donald Pose" although I'm very aware that that is a terrible insult to Luke himself.

Clearly I meant "good balanced finish on my follow through" not on the backswing

I go through ohases of concentrating on nit hitting it too hard, taking an extra club and swinign easier and my play always improves as a result, but then I slip back to the bad old ways and start trying to rip it down the fairway and all manner of evils return. Swinging within yourself is definitely the path to good scoring.

If you want a balanced rhythmic swing you could do a lot worse than look at this mans golf swing.

Nice smooth swing, as an aside he's got one of the biggest left heel lifts on the backswing I've ever seen.

even in slow motion I find Lawries swing a bit aggressive (not right word but I'm tired), that left heel actually extends to the whole foot nearly coming off the ground, strangely enough in normal speed it looks quite rhythmical.

This is the swing to emulate and he's not short either as the connection is so good.

This is something I'm working on at the minute.

With switching (back) to S&T I'm trying to swing more smoothly rather than coming out of my shoes as I hit the ball.

No doubt once I'm confident I have the fundimentals down I'll start swinging like a tool again :D

Just watched his swing in 2009 and he didn't lift his heel at all. Strange to change, but seems to be working for him.

I think it was Peter Alliss who said.."it's a game of effortless power, not powerless effort" timing is everything, but oh so hard to achieve...
