lesson has ruined my game

Most players on here will tell you that once you've had a lesson you may well go backwards first. If he has made changes you need to stick with them until they feel natural (and not go back to old habits) and really work on any drills he's shown you. It will get better but you need to be patient

Out if interest what handicap are you on and why did you go for the lesson?

I always give myself enough time between a lesson and my next round to get a couple of good sessions on the range in so I can bed in the changes.

Even the slightest change can mess up you're timing and you need to allow time to get everything back in sync again.

Stick with it. It'll come.

Got to agree with Homer. My pro has been slowly building my swing from ground up. Over the past 10 months he's made changes to a few things that have felt unnatural at first but after a while you get used to them. Persevere with it and train the changes till you trust them. I'm still a work in progress but am making headway.

hi birdie i dont have a official h/c as ive only been playing since oct last year im not a member anywhere
i just play the council courses

i had a lesson cos ive been having trouble using my driver
the guy that gave me a lesson said i should be hinging my arms more on my back swing which was helping with my driver shots.

but i cant hit my irons as well when i hinge my arms

am i doing something wrong here?

Dont really understand hinging arms -if you can keep a straightish left arm as you turn back and downswing that would be a good thing imo, not sure why a pro would ask you to hinge your arms?

its kinda hard to explain but when im using my driver he told me on my back swing i need to hinge my arm

so from address swing back 90 degrees
so my left arm is under my chin
and from there hinge my arms

is this the swing u use?
and if so apart from stance is your driver swing and iron swing the same technique?

I havn't got a scooby do what your on about 'hinging arms' but I will say any swing changes always feel awkward at first you just have to trust what your doing and stick with it. Most importantly dont be tempted to go back to what you were doing before under pressure, cause that didnt work either.

I played the game for 6 months cack handed and when I went for a lesson, the pro made me change to the conventional style. I literally couldn't hit the ball and thought it would be atleast 6 more months before I would be back on a course. Within 3 weeks I was hitting the ball better than before.

Stick with it.

You went to a pro to get him to improve your swing.

He's offered you that help and you're not happy.

Why ?

Coz it's not easy ?

Coz you're going to have to put a load of effort into the game ?

Well, don't bother then.

Loads of golfers are happy playing with their crap swings, and playing to their mid / high handicaps.

There isn't a golfer out there that didn't get good without putting in years of effort, and thousands of golf balls.

To be a pro you need a huge amount of talent, and years of total application. To be a decent amateur you need a bit of talent, and years of as much application as you can handle.

But if you don't want to, there's noone that's going to make you.

If golf was an easy game we'd all get fed up with it.

Now, get down and give me twenty !!

:) :p

hi guys i had a golf lesson from my local pro he changed a couple of things to my swing and now i cant play

its like when i first ever started playing all over again im not happy

There are people playing this game for 20 years and they STILL can't swing a club properly. When they feel a little more confident they also go for a lesson...and then it's back to square one for them too :)

Yes. You should try some of the stuff I'm doing.

Got to go back to go forward. If you're the sort of person that can, you'll do fine. If not..........

I could barely hit the ball for at least the first 100+ balls. When I realised it was going to be that bad, I started practising in the garden without a ball. Since it's a backswing issue I figured hundreds of reps ought to help ingrain it.

If your looking for a quick fix, it doesn't exist.

If your gonna have lessons you need to accept that your gonna need to put in a lot of hard work over several months and you are more than likely going to go backwards before you go forwards.

If you're not prepared to do that then you're wasting your money.

I've said this before but no-one ever learned to hit a golf ball well without hitting thousands of golf balls badly.

Be patient, listen to you pro, understand what he is telling you and put the work in and it will come.

This is bang on. The fact you misunderstood "hinging wrists" aas "hinging arms" hints that you either didn't listen, or didn't understand what you were being told.

I'd also say, that it seems rather advanced for someone who's been playing the game for less than a year, when surely what you'd most need is proper posture/hand position/ball position, ie. the basics.

I'm guessing you got lessons form one of the fannies at the kings links?

Well said that man!

I'm tantalisingly close to hitting the ball better than ever in my golfing life. It's taken 500-600 balls and more "air swings" (reps x 1,000s) than I've done in years. But I refuse to be beaten....not this time....I have the quarter finals of the club matchplay soon and for the 3 days before it'll be no swing thoughts just hit it the best I can before taking on the game. After that, back to normal - 4 perfect, 2 atrocious, 2 perfect, 3 atrocious, same old, same old........you have to BELIEVE.
