Hi All

I am looking to start playing golf but have a bit of a dilemma. I am naturally a lefty - writing, tennis badminton etc, but have played golf on a couple of occasions with right handed clubs as i didnt have any leftys to borrow. I want to buy some clubs and start playing but im not sure which route to go. I can hit the ball about equal distance both ways but right handed feels more comfortable as ive had more experience of that. Should i go to left handed clubs, which make take longer for the basics and possibly be better when im a little more advanced or should i go for lefts?

If it helps I am predominatly left sided (writing, darts kicking a football etc) but I bat right handed and play golf right handed. I just learnt to play this way and so it seems normal. I guess its a question of what feels best for you

Seems like it's only you that can decide, but it's not only how far you hit it. Are you more comfortable putting and chipping , or the little 'feel' shots left or right handed?
Like Homer i am left handed but play golf right handed, infact anything i hold in one hand i would be left handed but two hands i am right handed or ambidextrous :D

I'm a lefty, however, I have been encouraged to perform certain tasks right handed by my parents.
They have only done this where they felt that I could be at a disadvantage through lack of options or increased expense.
For example golf, much easier to get a right handed set at any budget level than left. Also I play guitar right handed, more options at any price range.
Its entirely your choice, but you have already played right handed, so switching may adversely affect you, however as its so early on, it may not!
What feels comfortable is the answer.

bumble......go left handed!!!

I'm left handed but have played all my sports right handed other than bowling (spin).

I had a pro once who went for a lesson with Denis Pugh.
Pugh asked him if he was left or right handed (he was playing right but something didn't seem comfortable to him) and recommended him to start from scratch left handed.
He was off 1.5 r/h (15 years) and got to +2 left (under two years!!!!)

Everyone I've spoken to has said I should have gone left handed......if you are "yet to start" properly playing, go for left.....

If you want to enjoy your game, go with whichever you feel comfy with. If you want to be good, go left!!!

Welcome to the Forum Bumble. What an opening post :)

I am a very right handed person who was taught to play cricket as a left hander (as it disrupts the fielding side). For me though this seemed entirely the correct way round to play as my strongest side and master eye faced the bowling and most of the power in my shots came from pulling through with my right arm.

As a consequence it was natural for me to play golf as a lefty although I might putt better the other way round .

I have met many left handers who are naturally right handed, and vice versa as confirmed by some posts already made on this subject.

In raquet sports terms, I play golf "backhand" i.e. my stronger right side seems to most of the work.

It might be best if you got advice from a professional on this. I would say though that if you go right handed you will have far fewer problems trying and buying new clubs.

Best of luck.
