Leaking cistern

Now that looks like a similar mechanism to mine.
Chap stripped the bit on the left. Think the top pulls off.
Gave it all a good clean and replaced a washer.

With all the jiggling around it seems to have stopped trickling, the only thing stopping it though is the surface tension around the edge of the pipe.
When you've been turning the height adjustment screw next to the float, are you making the float go higher or lower?

Flush the toilet then gently lift the float as high as it will go. Is water trickling in or does it stop completely?

I can't actually see.the float.but the I'm guessing it's higher as the arm bit is higher.

The trickling does stop when you lift it, I'm guessing it needs adjustment some how but I don't know how.
If it's just this and i can't figure a way to adjust this ( I've seen clips on youtube where the float chamber can be moved up or down, but this one looks fixed) then I think if I can add a bit of pipe to the overflow to raise it up a.fraction , this might solve this.

Turning the screw adjusts the maximum height of the float, therefore the depth of water in the cistern.
The "leak" you've described appears to just be water going down the overflow into the bowl because your float is getting too high.
You need to lower the height of the float. On most inlet valves this can be done by turning the screw anti-clockwise. You probably just need to lower it by half an inch to keep the water below the overflow pipe.

This screw...

If that doesn't work you probably need somebody who understands them to actually be in a position to get hands on.

Thanks , that pretty much what I did, out to max and back one turn.
Seems to be very fine margins.

Give me the old ballcock anyday.

I would repeat - you still have to adjust the float for temperature in a ballcock and float system, it is just that a lot of people do not realise this. Mine was going about 1" above recommended fill level when I last checked it.
