Landline oddity

At work we have one phone line in. We have an issue where when someone is on the phone, (small company, rarely receive phone calls, most comms by email), instead of getting an engaged tone the caller goes straight through to a voice mail. Problem is we don't know where that voice mail is? We have not set it, it does not appear on the phone answering machine.

I have spoken to the handset mfr and they say it is not them. I have spoken to the line provider and they say it is not them. I would get another phone but there is no point if it is the line.

Anyone know about phones and phone lines? Can anyone suggest where the messages are going to?

we have had an automated Vm message a few times, but no idea how we retrieve them, assumed it was BT??

not a problem and longer, we had decorators in at the beginning of the year (jan) to do the hallway and stairs. The had unplugged the phone in the wall cabinet by mistake and we didn't realize until about May we had 'nt had our usual 5 PPI and Microsoft cold calls a day.
