Lake District help

My neighbour is booked up there for 4 days.
Big list of restrictions eg only 2x2 hour sessions in the pool.
Last I heard he was thinking of cancelling.

BTW ....There is a good Bird of Prey centre just south of Penrith. means crossing the M6 though.

The osprey viewpoints in Dodd Wood, above Bassenthwaite Lake, are well worth a visit.

Old Man Of Coniston, fairly easy walk to the top but stunning views when you get there.
I would also suggest staying at Grizedale campsite just for the experience, but I guess you've already got digs sorted out lol

I’m off there soon too, just under a week in a Glamping Cabin!

I’m sure I can take the 5 year old up one of those little hills they have there no issue.

My parents, who work a campsite up that way, suggest Castle Crag, I recall Catbells being easy but I was older than 6 when I last did it, although that was probably in the late 90s.

Love Catbells, but not sure it is suitable for a 6 yr old.
When the weather changes it's a long way back in the driving rain. I had to help an old lady down in a gale once, she was wearing a packamac and plastic rain hood (also some clothes underneath ?), I found her stuck on one of the narrow ridge paths.

I walked up The Old Man with a couple of mine a few years ago. The younger of the 2 was 7. She was fine. Having said that, a year is a lot at that age... We went up from Torver (though you can do it from town via the Walna scar path), and the only really steep bit is up from the Tarn at the bottom of Dow Crags. It's not that much of a struggle on a sunny day.

If they have encountered swallows and amazons you can take the ferry up and down Conniston Water and look into the harbour at wild cat island...
Also recommend the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway mentioned above.

As kids we enjoyed Harter Fell from Eskdale - there is a great scramble to get to the top. And of the Coniston Fells, Wetherlam is my favourite - a fantastic walk and great views. I prefer walking up from Tilberthwaite Gill. And again - like Harter Fell - a bit of a scramble to get to the top.

Ulverston as already mentioned is good.

Seascale is a quality links close to Wasdale although I have been told fairways are a little iffy at present.

Carlisle is a good parkland just off the motorway and a little further afield is Silloth which is a class above any other track in the county.

Wainwright's Inn at Elterwater is very family and dog friendly, good food as well. You can walk along the river first of all, pick up some nice slate, and then fill your face ?

Perhaps not a hidden gem but Muncaster Castle is a good place to visit. Your dog can't go everywhere there but it should be worth it still. For the owl bit, one of you will have to wait for the others to go around.
Visited Muncaster Castle today, as we’re staying close by. Castle tour is really limited due to Covid (4 rooms only). Gardens and Bird of Prey Centre good but would have felt a bit miffed if we’d travelled any distance.
