My wife has recently registered an interest in joining in my golf obsession, and looking at getting her a starter set of clubs. However, I dont know much about ladies clubs, so could use a little advice. she is pretty tall (5'10") is fairly strong and still under 30, so I wonder if she really needs special "lady clubs" as there is a lot more choice in the mens market - is there anything that different about women's clubs apart from the length?

thanks for any advice offered.

Pretty colours? :D?

I'd imagine shafts are lighter and whippier, grips thinner and heads of lighter material.

But those are only guesses!

Yeah, as above, the shafts are lighter and whippier. Even strong ladies should not really use mens clubs (pros excepted, who use what suit their swing speed), although I guess senior shafts are probably pretty close to ladies. Most of the ladies I see play, even ones who hit a good ball, and do other sports such as tennis, still collapse a bit at the top, and don't really have the wrist strength to whip the club head through.

I bet if you asked your club pro he would reccommend ladies clubs for ladies, and junior clubs for juniors.

As an aside, I bet if you had to play with X flex shafts, you would struggle.

Lie angle is different too.

If you were getting clubs for yourself, you'd go custom fit, so providing she is serious, why not do the same for her?

Then she will have some clubs that suit her, whether they are classed as 'ladies' clubs or not.

Is it not better to go custom fit once you have a consitent swing so you know what you really need - when you are learning you swing style / speed etc is going to evolve a lot in the early days?

True. If she has never swung a club, then a full custom fit probably won't be useful.
That said a static fit will at least give a reasonable starting point, and you'll get an indication of swing speed.

You could always just get a couple of individual clubs fitted, and then later on when she is more consistant upgrade to a full set.

Hi
I agree with you on not yet having custom fitted clubs for a complete beginner. Other than Ladies clubs being shorter on average than mens clubs they are lighter and whippier. I use Ladies clubs (being of the female gender :)) and the average length of ladies clubs suit me very well but then I am only 5'3" tall, as you say your partner is quite tall maybe a set of mens with graphite or senior shafts may well suit her better but as mentioned before it may be an idea to go and have a chat with your pro (assuming you have one) if you haven't got a pro then maybe your local golf shop.
Hope you find something and I hope your partner enjoys her new golfing experience :)
