Tour Rookie
Played in the second round of the Summer Singles last night on our Old Course. Playing against an 8 hcp so receiving 6 shots following my recent cut from 16 to 14.
Teed off at 430 in dry, still conditions (this wouldn't last!!)
Made a nett birdie at the first with a solid drive, 7 iron to the front of the green and a decent lag putt to 18 inches which was conceded. Went one up when oppo missed a par putt from 10 feet.
3 off the tee on the second when my drive leaked right OOB, through the back of the green for 4, oppo knocked a great iron to about 4 feet and holed the putt/ All square.
Halved the par 4 third in bogeys, and the par 3 4th in pars, before leaking another OOB on the 5th, a par from my oppo sent me 1 down.
Halved the par 3 6th in bogeys, before parring the par 5 7th (with a shot) against a bogey to return to all square.
Halved the par 5 8th in par to stay all square (bit of a scramble on my part but holed a good 12 footer for a half.
Found the front bunker on 9 (par 3, pin at the back) oppo found the middle of the green. Splashed out to 5 feet, oppo putted too far, just inside mine. I holed, he missed, I was 1 up at the turn.
This became 2 up at 10 with a nett birdie against a par. Stayed two up with bogeys at 11, before going 3 up at 12, holing a 5 footer for par, oppo missed from just inside me.
Lost the par 3 13th with a par against a birdie, then lost the 14th (with a shot) to a birdie, I made a nett par, to be 1 up.
Went 2 up with a bogey on 15, after my oppo thinned a chip through the green and failed to get up and down.
Back to 1 up on 16 after making what can only be described as a 'horlicks' of a fairway bunker shot, oppo made a good par with an up and down from 60 yards.
I missed the par 3 17th green long and right, oppo was 20 feet away on the green. A decent chip to 6 feet left me a tricky downhill 5 foot right to left putt for a half, which went straight in the middle of the hole to leave me needing a half down the last to win the match.
My 3rd leaky drive of the day left me an unplayable lie in the trees on the right, oppo was in the middle of the fairway. After he'd played up 20 yds short of the green, I took a penalty drop which left me an iffy lie and a Seve like shot back to the fairway. Which I mishit and left myself still in the foliage. Chipped out then missed the green for 5. Oppo chipped it stiff for a par, so off up the first we went.
Oppo found the right rough, I hit my best drive of the day, middle of the fairway. Oppo duffed a hybrid from the rough, still behind my drive, the pulled an iron to the greenside bunker. I hit a 7 iron pretty solid, found the left edge of the green about 20 ft away from the hole.
Oppo got out of the bunker to about 12 feet. I had 2 to win (assuming he holed the putt), and we shook hands when my (nervy) lag putt ended up 18 inches from the hole.
Well pleased to have made it throught to the 3rd round (last 32), and also to have played (approximately) to my new handicap.
