Knock on effects of school closures

It appears that children are missing out on the free school lunches due to school closures.

In the article I read it also appears that food bank donations are going down as people stay at home.

Food bank donations will be down because you can't buy enough for yourself in Tesco

Wife went today after I couldn't get a few bits on my way to work here is the list she sent me

Tesco shelves where empty

No
Bananas or apples
cleaning stuff
Pasta
Rice
Toilet tissue
Kitchen rool
I got the last two boxes of tissues

She got the last milk and bread and will freeze it incase she can't get it when she needs it for little one

All Key Stage 1 (year 1 and 2 at primary/infants) kids get free lunches plus people in other Key Stages as long as they qualify. But not sure what can be done, you'd hope that they would be fed at home but this is not always the case. Some charities and indeed schools are stepping in to see what they can do to ensure they kids get a meal, but it is a difficult one. Indeed there will be a lot of short term issues caused by school closures with regards to child care which I suspect will be coming to the UK pretty soon.

Big issue is surely how do workng parents deal with having their kids at home unexpectedly. They plan for the holiday times as you know they are coming but this is unplanned. It is going to be very tough, particularly if the clubs that normally accomodate kids out of school also close at the same time. Major headache and logistical nightmare coming up. I'm pleased mine are older but I feel for others with what is coming up.

My company has told everyone to work from home if they can. Fully appreciate there are many that can't, but if every company followed that it would help a bit. Depending on your childs age and how much they need supervising in the day.

One good thing that may come out of this is that people do reassess if they really do need to be in the office all the time and companies also reassess if they can let more employees work from home from time to time. Again fully appreciate it isn't for everyone, but it would certainly help with congestion/pollution/quality of life etc in some cases.

Demand would fall for travel services and less strain on public services

Why do people have to do face to face meetings to smoose clients? Facetime is available. Really you don't need to travel to have business meetings .. would reduce the carbon footprint of the world massively!!!!!!!

Running out of milk is one thing which is pretty normal for most supermarkets round here. I cannot understand stockpiling it as the cows will continue to need milking every day. So it is hardly likely to run out for days on end.

Plastic milk cartons say " Not suitable for home freezing". I have put milk in my home freezer for as long as I can remember.


Running out of milk is one thing which is pretty normal for most supermarkets round here. I cannot understand stockpiling it as the cows will continue to need milking every day. So it is hardly likely to run out for days on end.

It's mainly for the little one

Keep 4 pints in the freezer incase can't get then she can have her nightly milk and we can have our teas until we can get some more

I wonder if they'll let GCSE and A level exam yeargroups in? Other years can probably catch up, but would be hugely disruptive for this lot. Early summer is predicted to be peak virus, right in the middle of exams.

As I've worked from home for a long time remote Zoom meetings are second nature to me. Switch your web cam on so you can see all the faces of the meeting participants and off you go. I agree that face to face is useful in some situations, but I'm convinced that a fair few could be done remotely with little to no impact on the efficiency of the meeting, especially if you are not trying to sell something but it is just an update/few decisions type meeting.

I've been invigilating all day for GCSE mocks. Training session scheduled for next week but was told we'll get confirmation, or not, the day before. Mocks now finished but a number of ad hoc exams in the next month or so.

I disagree. Personal contact makes a huge difference if you have not met before. People open up more face to face, no question.

Less so after the first time and organisational meetings can certainly be done via links. Sales, a different matter.

It's time we reset the norm

The world needs to change and that's a fact

For the world to change attuide needs the change

If a face to face meeting is more important than the future of the human race it just goes to show what a battle it's going to be to get anyone to change full stop

That meeting could have been done via conference call to minimise risk of infecting the building

Suspect they'll end up with their projected grades if the worst comes to the worst. Wish they'd have done that in my day as reality did not quite match up with my teachers over active imaginations on how well I'd do

Operational meetings and sales meetings are very, very different things. I've been in plenty of both and I would certainly agree with you regarding the former.

There is a cheesy phrase in sales, people buy from people. It's quite true though. Not always but enough to make a difference. I do most of my communication with customers via email now. That works most of the time but at the beginning of a relationship or for a big order face to face makes a huge difference, it just does.

I think it’s more the bottling factory and transport.
Just bring the cows to Tesco and bring a bottle!

Don't underestimate the environmental impact of 100 people sitting at home with the heating on for 6 months of the year, boiling individual kettles, and watching TV all day (not that they'd do that working at home ?) as opposed to them sitting in a modern, well insulated office with a big urn and no TV.

I'm not saying they're equal. Just saying the carbon footprint saving may not be as big as you think.

On another note. I work for the NHS. The only childcare I have are people right in the danger zone.
I do have the ability to work from home as I'm considered high-priority but with a 7 and a 5 year old running about, climbing the walls, it's going to be difficult to focus on work.

I could put a lead on them and chuck them in the garden ?. Social services will be self isolating anyway.
