In St Andrews for a few days and saw online (teeofftimes.co.uk) that there was an offer to play the courses at St Andrews Bay (Fairmont) for £25. I knew they had gotten favourable reviews & thought this was too good a price to pass up.
Really this place is in great shape & was amazed at how quiet it was & the number of tee times available online. Begs the question how the place is doing.
Played the Kittocks, which seems to be preferred by those who have played them both.
Fortunately the weather was fair with only a light breeze. While the course is on the cliff top & has been designed with a linksy feel, it's not really a true links. That aside, it's a very nice course with some fantastic holes.
However, I really think this would be a tough tough course with a stiff coastal breeze. A lot of greens protected with bunkers info front, which would be very hard to access in windy conditions.
That said the place is presented beautifully with planked faces to bunkers & a few big double greens. Also a ravine that comes into play in 2 holes and of course the view over the town & North Sea Coastline.
Obviously its a resort course so it's fairly open, albeit with a few fairway bunkers at 220 yards or so. Greens are also large but in excellent condition & plenty of subtle breaks.
Sadly I didn't play particularly well & really have to get used to playing Championship length courses as I have sufficient length to get round, but just get in my head that I have to middle every shot.
but Bottom Line... Incredible value for £25 in peak season & well worth a trip for that sort of money.
