Our family were on holiday in the Kirkcudbright area recently. Since we all play golf, we were looking to play some local golf courses whilst we were in the area. I had a good look at the courses available via their websites and the wee course at Kirkcudbright caught my eye. A nice wee course, right on our doorstep and they had a 'summer offer' showing on their website. I emailed the club before we travelled and they responded very quickly and detailed their summer offers. We ended up with a temporary membership for both my wife and I for only £100 for the fortnight we were there. Unlimited golf, full 7 day availability, use of all facilities, what more could we ask for. The club's walk on round is £28 so we were more than happy to take up their offer.

The welcome we received at the club was great, the course, well kept and in great condition given the mixed weather of late. The course plays over undulating ground so there is a fair bit of walking involved. Some terrific views over the Dee estuary are to be had though. A tight course where precision off the tee gets a reward rather than blasting it off into the distance. Not a long course by modern standards, but well laid out and with enough defences to make you think before trying to play your shot on some occasions. The greens were in great condition at the time of our visit. The ball rolled true and if you had the line, the putts dropped. There's a good mix of par 4s and some very nice looking par3s that make you play the right club to the right place. A couple of par5s that weren't too hard on us, but still made you think out your approach to the green. Our only problem was the rather warm weather we experienced whilst we were there. That was a welcome problem though as we'd played so much in driech weather at home before the holiday.

The clubhouse had a well stocked bar and a caterer that did a mean 'all day breakfast'. What more could a golfer want.

So if you're in the area, a wee trip to play Kirkcudbright is well worth the time and effort.
