"Keep your head down" Good or bad advice?

I focus on a piece of grass directly behind the ball through my swing which keeps my head down and for 1 sec after the ball is gone...Seems to work a treat for me....Same goes for putting.

So far we are at don't keep it down and don't keep it still...

Some lateral movement is OK, some vertical movement is not advised.

That'd be my take.

Hogan and Tiger both have quite a bit of vertical movement and here it is for you all to see.

I've heard many a pro claim that Tiger's head lift and "dip" through the ball is one of his least consistent attributes.

Tiger is kind of wayward.

:)

NO No No! This can cause a reverse pivot. You would be hard pushed to find someone flexible enough to keep there head still. You should keep your head level, it will move slightly back on the back swing and may even rotate slightly and then move forward through to impact to it's start position.

I don't agree. There is a difference between taking a good posture and swinging without "lifting" your head and having your chin down and having no chance of making a good swing.
I keep my head down and I don't have a reverse pivot BUT I swing with my head in a decent place to start with.
:D :D
I was not commenting on keeping your head down, I said don't keep it still. Two different things, try getting someone to hold your head still as you swing back, then try keeping it level/down. Most modern swing coaches (Leadbetter, Cowen, Harmon etc) say the same thing about head movement.

I've always been told that head down especially at address is a big NO NO as it puts the chin towards the chest and therefore restricts turn. This has obvious knock on effects (lack or coil, lifting, reverse pivot). Much better to focus on a decent posture with the held up aloowing the shoulders to turn underneath. As for head movement, there has to be some movement and as long as sideways or lateral isn't excessive I don't see too much of a problem

Agreed. I read it wrong. :)

hehe... stramash (I Googled it)... "keep your head down if there's a disturbance, racket, or crash"

If that's your definition, then you're definately doing that oral sex malarky wrong.

How do you use the racket at the same time?

I'm beginning to get disturbing images of Cliff and Sue.

:o

Bad advice btw.

A golf swing is full of movement in various directions. Concentration on the 'nots' is only going to restrict your swing and cause tension where you don't want or need it.

That's not to suggest you should be moving it about all over the place, you need to keep relatively still throughout the swing.

But

Concentrate on the positive images, not the negative ones.

I can only say what I've been told/advised and what works best for me.
When I went for my 1st lesson on coming back to the game I was told to keep more room between my chest & chin. Therefore I'd say "keep your eye on the ball" is more important and more accurate than "keep you head down".
With regard the posts about head movement........one of the things my coach was working on last lesson was keeping my head more still.
On my backswing I was swaying back and so my head would move alittle over half a heads width to the right.
As such he held a stick to the side of my head as I took my backswing to try to get me out of this habit.
Obviously I was told that it's impossible to keep it perfectly still.

Annika is looking down the fairway at impact, not at the ball. It works for her.

Easch to their own I guess.

Mind you, what did she ever win?

i do my best to follow the drill but with a double chin......... :D
i'll get me coat :o

this is bad advice(i should know!), i think a drill(like puttting a coin down and keep looking at it) is a far better option, with the same result!

Dont you have a golf ball offering the same benefit just before you hit it?? ;)

Try giving Stiggy Hosgson some of this advice, for those that aint familiar with his swing, sorry I cant find a vid of it but the lad lokks straight back behind him at the top of his backswing!

Cool....my old pro did this for me. :)

I always try to watch the club head go through the ball, I can do what I want with my head as long as I do this.
