Just how bad am I?!

I think you are being too hard on yourself. There are a number of things here. Get more lesson. Get the fundamentals sorted from the start and you will be set up when you head onto bigger courses. The second thing is that par 3 courses tend to have very small greens which makes accuracy a premium and sadly it a simple fact that none of us as beginners were good enough to control this.

Try and work on the short game especially the putting alongside other lessons. The better you can chip and putt the better you will score. Other than that, don't worry. IT WILL COME

Thanks Homer! I'm having more lessons over the next few weeks so looking forward to seeing how quickly I can get that score down, or not, as the case may be!

Yeah I definitely appreciate the importance of the short game. For me my biggest issue at the moment is that I am not at all confident with each tee shot that I'm going to hit a nice clean shot. So at each tee I found myself trying to make corrections to my swing, especially after a bad previous tee shot. Once I can hone my swing a bit more and be confident enough with the mechanics to be getting a nice clean contact each time I hope to drop those scores!

Me and my dad often debate what sort of score a pro would manage to go round our local par 3 course in with the same conditions we have. With the poor greens, even getting on the green in one can often end up with a 4 or more.

Thats a very good point! A few of the greens weren't as well kept as I thought they would be for a pricey par 3 course, and I took more putts than I thought I should on a few holes, though some of that was probably lack of concentration on my part!

I only started playing 2 years ago.
You have to be prepared for a long hard learning curve.
You will, duff it, hook it, slice it, have air shots & at times become extremely frustrated, but in the end, when you can stand on that 1st tee in a club comp & compete it all becomes worth it.

My advice to you is that you must concentrate on getting the basic's of the game right at the beginning.
Correct grip, stance & alignment are key elements that must be mastered before any bad habits creep in.
Get these elements right & the rest will follow in time.

So your first ever round on a 18 hole course six weeks after picking up a club you shoot 84. Im guessing your course is par 72 so your 12 over par, giving you a handicap of 12. Mate if this is the case you will be off scratch in 12 months. I started playing christmas by best mate is a teaching pro and i have had lost of lessons free of charge and rounds free, Im playing off 17 now and started at 28. Coming down 11 shoots in 8 months is good but your straight in at 12 you will be on pga tour in 3 years

And you managed all that without a driver, rescue, or fairway wood either.

Ooops. Skim alert!

Bristol, don't worry about it. I have no idea what my first scores were - I suspect I may have erased them from my mind! Do what your doing and have lots of fun...it's a game after all!

Haha yes, if it was a proper par 72 course I wouldn't have been posting on here, I'd have been buying everyone drinks in the clubhouse! :D

You're right of course, that it shouldn't be worried about and to just enjoy the game. And the thing is I really did enjoy it, even though I'd hoped to be hitting a lot better. I actually jumped in the air after making that birdie, how uncouth :D

It was mostly my inconsistent striking on the tee that cost me shots, I'm sure with a few more lessons my pro can get me hitting straighter and more consistently and not wasting shots on duffs etc!
