Just a chat.............................................. ..............

I think that kids should get SOME homework the problem is that his maths teacher gives him some then in his next lesson he gets some more and by the end of the day he's got 2hrs worth some times. 30min perhaps even 1hr of EASY homework for a 11yr old would be more than enough.... and they shouldn't get ANY on Fridays in my opinion... weekends are kid time (growing up) and family time.

When he got a detention after school I had to wait in the car with my little 'un who goes to school nearby as there was no point driving home and then all the way back to school again... what if I had to be at work 20mins later? Should I lose my job and then not have money to pay my mortgage because my son failed a French test at school?

When I was at school it was compulsory that 24hrs notice be given for detention.

I'd rather he lost his break time at school (enough time to eat though) than penalise me in after school hours. If it was a behavioural thing then I'd look at it differently perhaps, but failing a test?

So it inconvenienced you that your child got detention?

Best to do your damnedest to make sure it doesn't happen again!

Both perfectly honourable occupations.

What.. For a 10 year old.

My 8 year old gets homework every weekend. I encourage the teachers to give him homework. He's learned that if he finishes it on Friday night, then he's got all weekend to play football and x box and whatever he wants. But if its still there on Saturday afternoon he misses watching the football. Funnily enough, i've never had to stop him watching the Latics yet...(even though he might wish I did on occasion.

I have no problem being a parent and taking responsibility for my child but I can't necessarily change or force his ability to learn.... he failed a test and got detention... during that detention they went over the test and did it again... HE FAILED IT AGAIN

what's next, is it firing squad for him?

Now I'm happy to sit down and go through it with him as CLEARLY he doesn't get whatever the teacher is trying to teach him but I won't be PUNISHING HIM if he can't get it right.

Maybe I should do what that woman did when her son couldn't recite verses from the Qur'an?

Of course not for a 10 year old.
But a few hours homework at the weekend, however inconvenient it is, might instill a work ethic that will come in useful in later life.

We do that already, it's not a problem even though I personally don't agree with it. The detention at school is my main bugbear.

Is the detention purely as a punishment, or is it to get extra tuition?
If it's the former you need to talk to the school. If the latter then you need to accept it for the best.

I am going to go and talk to the school and I do accept that it will help him focus in the long run. I would have prefered if they had just sent him home with the test and a pointer that he had failed it rather than just give him a detention and the ramifications that I (and his sister) have to suffer outside of school hours. Fortunately I did not have anything more pressing to be getting on with and did my DAUGHTERS homework with her while we waited.

The point is a detention for failing a test??

I don't really care whether it's punishment or further tuition, he failed it again during the detention. I'm seeing the irony there.

Detention for failing a test!? That isn't how to engage with a pupil, that's old fashioned bullying it into the child.

Detention for someone that young, and without notifying the parents... Mmm, well at least it's different I guess.

Actually he told me the night before so I did know.... which brings up another point of giving the responsibility to the child of not only remembering, but facing up to their parents too.

I agree it breeds a 'do it or get punished' attitude which isn't the best way to live one's life.

Why do I still get up to 10 calls a day regarding PPI. Surely everyone that is going to claim has done so by now ? Surprisingly as a financial adviser I never took any out.
I love getting the calls i just stay on the phone for a while to wind them up :D
