Junior Organiser

My club is looking for a junior organiser to assist our assistant pro running the programme which has been very successful to date and has led to a thriving junior section. It's something I'm considering and have contacted the club about for further info but I'm interested to know if any other forum members have/are doing anything similar and if so, were there any particular initiatives or ideas you implemented that:

a) made it easier to run and organise
b) led to more juniors getting involved

If you had the chance, what would you like to do to help bring the juniors on?

I'm keen to go to the club and the assistant once I know more about the role with some ideas as I think this is a great opportunity to really help the junior section go from strength to strength

Did it for a number of years. Took it on when there were only 22 juniors on the books, and only about 8 playing. Passed it on with over 50 on the books, and about 35 very regular players. Sunday afternoon comps when there was nowt on and the course was quiet. Arranged with the pro and the Golf Foundation for funding for group lessons. Juniors 'v' Ladies Ryder Cup, Junior 'v' Committee, (top)juniors 'v' scratch team. Rules comps, divoting comps(inc free meal). Means and extremes comps with established and new juniors. Rules afternoon, with comp to follow. A 6 hole, 20 ball skins comp - done out of sight of the club, and they still don't know. Putting comps, chipping and putting comps - stroke play with top 8 playing a k'out. Dad's and lad's/mum's and daughter's comp - adopting parent provided for those kids whose parents didn't play - this also led to a few parents taking up the game. Weekly stroke play through the school holidays, important for more accurate handicaps as the juniors progress so quickly, especially during summer break. End of season prize giving dinner, inc parents - kids loved it, as did the caterer.

Don't forget you'll need an enhanced CRB(Disclosure) for all your helpers - important you follow the recommendations to the letter, e.g. if you a transporting kids to league matches never have only one child in the car with you - pick up and drop off at the club solves this.

Had a spell doing this, it's hard work and can be made easier by finding a small group of other members to help out on specific occasions. Its a fine balancing act, keeping the juniors happy with enough comps, coaching, fun events, matches, inter club events. Not something you can take on unless you can commit to it whole heartedly.

You're not wrong Tony. I've seen it too many times where someone comes in all full of promise, and then lets the kids down coz its too hard to get out of the chair. I'd rather be honest and let people make an informed decision than see kids disappointed again and again.

Our club started group sessions this summer with a pro from AG who is a member and a 2 handicap player also who is a teacher.
The first session was free and had 17 kids and after that it was £3 each for an hour.
Every week it got less and less and in the end there were 2 left.
I found out that the club were given a small amount of funds £250 that was matched.

I found out they had to pay the leisure company for the use of the practice area and pay the helpers.
What the hell happened to giving up your time free to help others especially kids.
The money ran out,the hour had become 40 minutes and not 1 kid will be a golfer for this club in the future would be my guess.

I have also just had clearance to work with my boys football team that he has just joined.

It has taken about 2 months to sort and I have just received my CRB certificate in the post this morning.

I now have to do a first aid course and a child protection course.
But I cant wait to give something back after playing for 15 years[all for free] the way it should be imo.

Been a co-junior organiser at my club since October 2014 and love every day of it.

have one of the stronger active junior memberships in the area, and work very closely with the Pro junior coach.
we run junior roll-ups twice a week in the summer months and once a week in the winter, the other being replaced by skills nights and rules quizzes in the club or on the range.

This year was the 1st year our junior congu team came runners up in the east devon junior league.
The satisfaction I get from helping out is what makes it worth it.

but, its hard work, and needs a lot of dedication and time. Although this year I am also the Mens Captain, so my life literally runs round the club at the moment.
