I don't know if this thread has been opened before, but I notice that every low single figure handicapper I know, is a master of ball-juggling, usually off the blade of a pitching wedge. The same applies to all professionals. We hear so much about hand/eye co-ordination in instruction articles in GM and other publications that I wonder just how big a part it plays in being really good at the game. For my part, I have tried many times to juggle the ball without success. Perhaps that's why I'm off 15 and maybe will not be able to get better.

Any comments?

Its good fun and annoys the hell out of H.I.D doors but does not make you a better player. On youtube there are some crazy videos of kids doing tricks.

Im living proof that being able to juggle a ball doesn't make you a good golfer. I play off 24 and can juggle a golf ball with a wedge for a considerable period of time. I only ever do it whilst I am waiting on a tee for a group playing their second shots from the fairway and just by doing this everytime I have become quite good at it. Obviously know where near professional level, but I can do a few tricks and keep it up for over 250 consecutive 'juggles'... makes your forearm ache after a while though. I must admit though the better the player, usually, the better they are at this.

Best trick for me is flicking up behind my neck then flipping it back and keeping on tapping the ball. HI.D. calls it my tap tap game???

theeaglehunter, Just looking at what you have in the bag. How is it working for you not having a 3 wood? I would have thought their be a massive gap in yardage between your diver and 5 wood.

i can do this a bit, usually try picking my ball up after pitchin with the wedge then keep it up on way back to the bag then flick it up and catch it

What do you consider "low".

I am 5 and cant do it save my life!!! I cant even flip them up into a basket.

Pi**es me off big time as I used to be able to juggle a football really well.

htl, there is obviously a big gap there, but I rarely hit a wood into a green so the yardage is rarely applicable...just think get it as far up the fairway with my 5 wood as possible. For example on a long par 5 if I hit my tee shot about 240-250 yards I will be left with about 250-260 yards left so i would not be able to reach with a 3 wood anyway, therfore I hit my 5 wood up about 200 yards and then pitch on.

I think I may loose out not having a 3 wood off the tee on short par 4s, but I hit my 5 wood over 200 yards off the tee and pretty straight as well so I would still only have about a 7/6 iron into the green. I think where I play a 3 wood just isn't required...although I am looking to get one in the fairly near future to try and sure things up off the tee on longer par 4s when my Driver maybe isn't accurate enough and my 5 wood not long enough.

A friend of mine caught his pro practicing his "keepy-uppy" with his sand wedge and enquired how many he'd managed to do on his best effort.

The pro replied, "972, I was on for a 1,000 but a lady came in the shop saying she wanted to buy a few things"
(the pro was thinking £££££ :))

"so I stopped to serve her, all she wanted was 5 plastic tees and a pencil!"

I can't do it to save my life. I try it and the ball goes miles and all the juniors snigger and as I'm walking off all I here behind me is click click as they juggle. (I'll get my own back though - I'll let the air out of their bike tyres)

Easy peasy for us irish golfers who have played Hurling, the greatest and fastest ball game in the world.
Hurling requires excellent hand/eye co ordination as the ball can travel at 100 miles an hour and you need to either catch or hit it whilst an opponent is also trying the same thing.

Hurlers who have played at the highest level and then turn to golf after their hurling career generally play to low single figures. The best hurler over the past 20 yrs-D J Carey from Kilkenny plays off a low single figure handicap-he also won a number of world handball titles, again another game requiring excellent hand/eye coordination.
