I had a shocker didn't want to hand the card in but my playing partner insisted I did. He is a long term member of my new club and he said all cards should go in.

I have been playing off 17 in society and regularly scoring 34- 40 points and winning the money on a frequent basis but on Saturday I scored 27 points.... my worst performance for about 6 months.

The reason I wasn't comfortable handing my card in was due to the poor performance and it isn't a true reflection on my game. I say this as last thing I want is to have a high handicap and be called a bandit and instantly alienate other members.

How is your 1st official handicap calculated? does it take the best hole score of the 1st 3 cards submitted and highlight of my round Saturday was Par on SI 1 hole and Birdie on SI 3 hole.

What do you guys think was I wrong to put this card in?
 
I shouldn't worry about being called a bandit, I was called one on Saturday and I'm playing off 11. If you have a decent round it seems that everyone has a right to tar you as a bandit these days. I have had enough bad round and I am certainly not going to apologise when I have a good one!
 
Always had your card in, its only 0.1 and as soon as you have a good round you will clear that 0.1 up and some. You would get the 0.1 for not handing the card in anyway.

Its not about ego, its about a score card on a day, you have the rest of your life to remedy it.
 
Certainly do not worry about being called a bandit. Joking accusations of banditry were thrown at my playing partner on Saturday who plays of 9 but had one of those days and went round in 3 over gross.

If the first handicap is too high it will soon come tumbling down. Do not forget that the pressure of having a card in your hand can often impact on your game as it adds pressure.

Nope - right to put the card in.
your handicap will be calculated from 3 cards - so some of the real shocking holes will be ignored

what you have just experienced is playing under medal conditions with a card in your hand. The pressure is immense compared to a bounce game with mates!

Don't worry about it - focus on the next two cards going in

then when you get your handicap if its too high then your handicap should tumble as you play comps

I get called a bandit all the time - you get used to it ;)
 
Your handicap will be calculated off your best card after it's been doctored to make any trebles and above doubles. Then the Sss of tees used is subtracted from gross to give your handicap previously an average was used but at present it the best card that counts.
Better luck with the other 2 cards
 
Joined my club last year and exactly the same thing happened - but for all 3 cards.
Just going by the numbers, I was getting 17, but I'd played (unknowingly!) with a couple of the lads on the hcap commitee who said 13 was quite enough.I was happy enough with that as I'd told them in society play I'd been at 10 in the past.
Like others have said, don't worry, it is meant to be enjoyed.
 
I handed in the first of 3 last week and it was the worst round of golf since I joined the club 2 months ago. Basically had 3 miserable holes which ruined the card, but the remainder were very good. I'm not bothered what cards go in, just want to be playing in some comps!
 
I don't have a complex of receiving a high handicap if justified but also don't want to be walking in with 48 points off 24 in 1st Stapleford Comp. I wouldn't consider that the best way to make friends its 12 shots off my previous round at this course only 2 weeks ago.

I know it happens to us all just hope one of the next 2 rounds is at my usual standard.

Why do you have a handicap in your signature?

I think your club will expect you to disclose your playing history. Although society handicaps do not necessarily reflect the player's ability under qualifying competition conditions, they should still be taken into consideration.

Note for your handicap cards trebles and worse and made doubles so your 3 bad holes will actually only count as doubles when they calculate your score against SSS.
 
The last time i got a handicap (2 years ago) i handed in my first three scores. the first one was 93 or something, the second one 85 and the third low 80's. I was persuaded to hand them in, 2 were in medals anyway. Used to be play off low single figures so was a bit embarrassed, but i;m glad i did as it helped me through the first few medals having shots to burn. It quickly evens out once you get going again
 
Hand them in whatever. I've no shame about hacking it round in a comp and finishing rock bottom. This weeks 0.1 and mickey taking is next weeks history and it'll be someone else. Anything you score over a double bogey is rounded down to a double and your best card will form the basis of the handicap. It seems you may have some issues with card and pencil in hand so there is no guarantee you'll reporduce the 38-40 point form in club comps anyway so the bandit tag may not apply. Even inf you do win, you'll get the appropraite cut and it'll make it harder next time (unless you're called Sundance)
 
My handicap is the weeky society handicap which is adjusted exactly the same way as club over 30 rounds played in last year. Therefore my handicap has probably been adjusted more than most in this time.

Yes this is played off White tees all I am trying to do is be genuine

I take it a club wont take ur society playing history into account - I'd personally just give you a handicap of 16.9 ;)
