John Huggan on cheating.

Agreed good article but it seems a bit unfair to me that he remained so politically correct all the way through the article before exposing Elliott Saltman for something that hasn't been proved??

The guy has just won his tour card and is looking forward to playing on the tour he has practiced all his life for then this is published in their national tabloid. As he stated himself to expose the cheats on the tour would be "Commercial suicide" so surely him exposing Elliott Saltman for something that hasn't been proved could be deemed commercial murder? or at the least it could be construied as verbal GBH?

Seriously though, seems a bit unfair and contradictory of the rest of the article.

Defamation —a lso called calumny, vilification, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words) — is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image. It is usually a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant).

Jumbo Ozaki was suspected 15 years ago of allegedly using an illegal ball which helped him knock it way past his fellow far eastern competitiors whils playing on far eastern tourrs ;)

He never seemed to be able to do the same when in the States or Europe, strange

The Major winner is Singh think he was banned from the asian tour at some stage. Any guesses on the rider cup player? Jumbo Asaki may be the hot balls player.

I think you guys have possibly missed the point, that being the whole thing is a grey area, unless it’s black and white….confused.

If you read the last few paragraphs again, you’ll read that Saltman was noticed by both his partners of consistent improper marking his ball. The Saltman situation is common knowledge and should have been dealt with, the same way as they deal with the sillier yet easy to enforce rule infringements mentioned earlier in the article.

I’ve just re-read the article and it’s a load of rubbish.

Huggan’s basic compliant is that the “authorities” don’t go looking for cheating but penalise it heavily when it is brought to their attention with hard evidence (usual via a confession).

In a sport that, by its nature has to be self governing, this is the only way to manage it.

If they start to be proactive all that will happen is we’ll end up in the “if the ref doesn’t see it, it’s Ok” world of other sports.

The Elliott situation seems to be being handle equally as sensibly, they’re waiting to hear his side for the story before taking any further action.

I watched Mark O'Mera placing his ball about 4" closer the hole than his marker ovr a 10ft putt during a televised comp about 10 yeras ago but the commentators didn't pick up on it.

Being considerred a cheat carries a lot more stigma than being proven to cheat.

I'm sure it must go on but how do the top players get away with it when the majority of events are televised even if the footage isn't shown in live feed. Every match also has rules officials walking with them and any number of other people (scoreboard holders, statisticians for yardages, GIR etc, the other players etc). I don't buy this thing about the reputation of the game being tarnished if someone is caught. I think it'll enhance it. Name and shame and it'll scare the others. If you do the crime etc.

He doesn't mention some very inaccurate marking of the ball in a PGA event last year by El Pato, everyone watching on TV saw it but no penalty, very poor show when other players still call penalties on themselves in the best tradition of the game.

Mark It Nearer got into trouble for a similar ball-marking issue at the Lancome in the late 90s, when Jarmo Sandelin called him out after a questionable replacement of a ball. Nothing formally happened, but O'Meara earned a new nickname among European golfers.

I get really annoyed, especially at local level, when people say "he's only cheating himself"

NO MATE - he's cheating you and me and everyone else in the competition, that's who he's cheating!
