On page 18 in an artical by Martin Samuel in todays Daily Mail (yes i know so thats why i want a second source and some comment) He quotes JN as saying about playing in a Champions event to mark 150 years of the Open Championship at St Andrews saying this.

" It really revolves around the Royal Bank of Scotland. If they want me to do work, yes. Am i coming on my own no"

This is odd on several levels as Samuel points out. JN would be paid (by us the taxpayer now as we own...is it all of RBS!!!)expenses and hotels bills etc.

Not the man doing things for the good of the game that i thought he was!!

RBS did alot of this over the past ten years with various sportsmen.

Does anyone know the truth about this quote

I am pretty certain that this is accurate and that JN did indeed say this. However I know that RBS sponsor him, so it's only natural that if they did ask him to do something at the Open then he would as part of his responsibilities to them. I have no problem with him not coming to the Open - he's done, and continues to do, so much for the game - which was particularly highlighted in one of the BBC's pre-Masters programme that showed him giving a golf clinic to young kids new to the game. Admittedly it was part of his deal with RBS, but at the end of the day he was still honouring his contract with them and giving his time to help others.

The guy is 70, let him live the rest of his life the way he wants to. Im nearly sure he is away fishing in the Bahamas now too and will watch the Masters from his boat. Good on him I say.

He is the RBS golf ambassador. He provides exposure for RBS in the US.

Yes i understand that. He has done this for a few years along with other ex snd current sportsmen.

This was fine in the good times but this kind of sponsorship in todays climate must be questioned and perhaps quite rightly RBS is not going to pay out for that kind of showcase.

And yes the poster that said he is 70 leave JN alone is right as well. What he has done for golf in general is fantastic.

What is a shame is when you hear comments like what JN has said. And there are so many sports people who ask for the money and expenses first.

I would hope that golf would never fall into the trap that so many Premier footballers have by asking for the money first.

Erm... bit late really. Thats why the big names come and play in certain events on the European Tour. Sponsors want them so they get paid big bucks to attend a client event in the run up to an event. this is because appearance money is frowned upon.

Ever wonder why a big name player would hit a ball off the roof of a hotel or a helipad overlooking some Saudi sand ?

Big jack isn't going to come over to play 4 holes in the Champions photo shoot event. But he may well come if RBS use his services for something else.

there may be a cut back on corporate entertaining, but it still goes on, and it still takes a lot of money to do it well :D
