redundancy  for the 2nd time in as many years.

got told today of how our company is struggling due to our budget being over spent and not bein back to normal till april.
just over 2 years ago i was made redundant from here and in may i managed to get my job back as there was one going. We had a toolbox talk this morning and they basically told us its all going down the pan again and south west water wont be bailing us out with a handout as its our fault we overspent all ready. they are going to have to look a "temporary lay offs" They are hoping to possibly move us around to other departments eg. go and be a digging team/fault finding for western power... The depot has realised if it gets rid of men temporary they are worried we wont come back which then leaves then up the creek when the cold snap comes in which thankgod makes watermains burst or april when general work kicks off properly again.
Although our profession is reparing water leaks in the highways being may gurney is a massive company theyare trying to get rid of all the subbies on other utility contracts in hope to just move all ppl on the R&M water contract around.

anyway with the wedding and house this year needless to say i am bricking it happening again.
although the only good thing to come out of all this last time was i found the wonderful game of golf lol.

Its not just our depot its 6 in total throughout the south west but aprently they will be looking at it by a depot by depot basis. no one contacted union yet as not had an offical job at risk. there is a meeting tomorrow with the employee reps and the big wigs and hopefully find out more info for monday

sorry just needed a rant

well last time i ended up working in a pub but also was hit by a 12000 pay cut which really did hurt the pockets, we are on flat weeks for a bit have been since before xmas. But rather do a flat week here then a busy week in a pub. was out of work for 1 week though which wasnt too bad. got my ear to the ground and my feelers put out to other utility companies for now though

I feel for you and hope that whatever happens in your life turns out for the good.

My regular playing partner found a decent job, after 8 months out of work, in early November. Went back to work on 2nd of Jan and was laid off due to "restructuring" - absolute bummer!

Ideal good news... It's gone to an employee vote but to stop lay off they are cutting our working week down to 40hours or to a 4days week at 38hours... This will be till April but it's better than having no job... It's been proposed today so will keep everyone updated... Fingers crossed

sorry dave might be a dialect thing but not sure what you mean? never heard this before:eek:

I am guessing he means shop steward. Old school guy who kept the troops in line/protected etc. Linked to the union with the powers of life and death. If he liked you, you got an easier ride than if he didn't.

I'm glad it looks better for you today than it did yesterday.

I'd want to ask if the guy(s) responsible for over spending are taking a pay cut or reduced hours!

My wife recently found out that the cardiac ward she works on are having enforced cutbacks, going from 4 night staff to 3, giving them 15 patients to look after each!

When they make cuts, it's nearly always from the wrong end of the workforce.

not sure on the people above. as normal they mess things up but its the ground level staff that always seem to take the hit. they are all salary those grades so an hours cut would play into there hands.

There's never been a good time to be made redundant... Think right now its most possibly more difficult than it has been for many years...

First time I was made redundant [five years ago] I found casual work straight away and a 'proper' job inside a month... I was more recently made redundant last September... I initially struggled to find any work but did find, eventually, some casual work in the run up to X'mas... I've been kept on for now [still on a casual basis] so the search goes on for something more permanent...

Hopefully things improve for you soon connor... At least I am 'lucky' enough to have less than a year left on my mortgage...
