Having absented myself from the game of golf for almost a decade, I have been practicing up at the driving range on a few occasions in recent months with a view to getting back into the sport. It has been an infuriating return, however, marred by an 80° angle of dispersion for my iron shots. Try as I might, I just couldn't narrow down those angles.
I went to Pete Cowen's Academy in Rotherham on Saturday morning for a quick 30 minute lesson with Nick and within 5 minutes he had deconstructed my stroke, rebuilt it from the ground up and stopped me swinging for power and instead had me swinging for control. By the end of the lesson I was hitting the best iron shots I have ever played and with a consistency I have never experienced previously. Dare I say it...I was enjoying golf.
I took my newfound confidence up to the driving range yesterday and hit 90 balls - brilliantly. That angle of dispersion has reduced to about 20 degrees for 90% of shots and 'wild' hits are only off-track by a matter of degrees as opposed to being devastating hooks and slices. I am relaxed, I am confident and I think I just 'got' how to play shots. :fore:
I now have 5 or 6 steps to setting up properly. My feet, my back, my knees, my weight are all setup methodically and the swings are so consistent. With a 7 iron, I am getting between 110 and 150 yards off the mat with almost every swing. Out of the 90 balls I hit last night, no more than 6 were wayward. :whoo:
I know this is just the very beginning and translating it onto a course will be an entirely different kettle of fish but I am over-the-moon that I have finally turned the corner in the ability to strike the ball consistently!
I finally understand how you guys can enjoy this sport!
