Or they put it in there when they first joined the forum because they thought it was a requirement.

I like to play good golf - i would like to be as good as i can.

I was chuffed to pieces when i got to cat 1 but i dont go out and worry about it when playing - getting .1 back doesnt bother me , getting cut isnt an aim or important. Its a number that is used to work out net results.

Will you be updating your sig if you go back to 6.........

Depends on each individuals ambition. Some state it's not and play for fun, some want to be able to play in the bigger more prestigious tournaments. I'd like to play in the Brabazon, The Amateur, Gerald Micklem, Lytham Trophy and Tillman Trophy, but to get in those you have to be really low. So is it important, for me to play in those, yes it is, but an old Pro said don't concern yourself with hc's, just play better golf and your hc will take care of itself.

Do you consider your handicap to be important or is it just a number that allows you to compete on equal terms with your mates? Or is it a status symbol, maybe low enough to get into better competitions and that is the important factor?

The last club I was at I got down to 2, but I was there for over ten years from the age of 13, and got to know the course and greens very well, so could get away with a fair few bad shots. It was fairly open, not much by the way of hazards.

Trying to find a new course, all of the potential venues around here are much shorter, but tighter than a ducks butt, and I'm going be lucky to be play to anywhere near 2, but I'm assuming I can't reapply for a new handicap? My last qualifying event was in June last year.

My h'cap has lapsed (was 14) so no not important but I do still set myself targets. Now my 14 year old his H'cap 15 is everything to the point where if he has a bad hole he worries about impact on his H'cap !! I just encourage him to play and enjoy it but sometimes at that age H'cap is a status thing.

I suppose it is to me, I would like to get as good at this game as I can and that is a way of measuring how you are doing. It's not the end of the world if it goes up but I'd much rather it was travelling in a downwards direction :D

That said, I have played with lots of people who play to a much better standard than their handicap would suggest, some just struggle mentally with a card in hand (ie me) and some are just outrageous bandits

If it doesnt matter why dont you remove it or change it to : -Cat 2 !!

As a marker of how my game is progressing then yes it matters to me, but as a status symbol like some, then no.

yes - important. Keen to get back to 9 as that tells me I have to (simply) get a par on half the holes and no worse than one over for the other 9. Just something about the 9/9 spilt. Then when I got to 6 I had the same thoughts about 12/6 split.

Oh yes. Im by no means a great golfer but over the last few years Ive been
working on my game and the only true record of improvement is my handicap.
Without it golf is pointless.

Absolutely hcp is important but like most things in life it's more important to some than others and there's always two sides:

- Having a relatively low hcp enables me to enter some competitions i couldn't otherwise. Once i'm in however, hcp is totally ignored and gross score is everything. Any hcp smugness issues you may have had soon evaporate when a higher cap' hands you your backside on a plate.

- It's always been a great way to measure progress since I was a kid starting out on 27.0 (my first hcp after putting in those three cards). It's been limiting however when i've put more importance on that than thinking about developing skills in my game. I've missed opportunities because of thinking about it and have learnt a few important lessons along the way. No doubt there's plenty more to come.

- Am i proud of my hcp? Yup, but there's more important questions to ponder: I take time out to play, do i enjoy it? Are my golf skills what i want them to be? Am i competitive against others? Mixed answers to these, often depending on the day, but having a hcp does enable me to persue them and constantly learn.

- It's always a cool way to measure yourself against others. Most of us competitive folk do it (comparing hcps) I dare to say, but it can be done courteously and repectfully - best done using that inner voice from my experience.

A long winded way of saying 'yes' (apologies) but please give it context and keep it respectful.

Yes it's important to me.
As a kid I had an aim, I wanted to play off 6 as I believed it was a good level to play the game at.
I've since beaten it and was immensely proud, especially when I got down to 4 for a few weks.

I want to be better at the game and my handicap is the measure of my game.
Also, as I turn 35 this November I will look to enter some mid-ams next year and the lower the better for getting in, or so I understand from some earlier posts.

Handicap for me is a leveller to enable me and my friends to have good competitive games off a level playing field. I dont put any pressure on myself to get low as I have neither time or desire to do so, that said I play in all club competitions and my aim is to play my best and try to win and in turn my handicap will take care of itself.
