Is this the doomed Open?

Today's debacle could've been avoided had the R&A had a two tee start on Friday that would've had the 2rounds completed knowing the weather wasn't going to be great Saturday.

It would've stopped today's balls up.

St Andrews couldn't work with a 2 tee start.....
You'd have a fleet of minibuses rumbling up and down for most of the day, holding up play as they went past.
For a 2 tee start you need 2 holes starting, at least in the vicinity of the clubhouse.

R&A getting flak but when they began play this morning, the course was playable.
Players were pulled off when winds increased -
Biblical rain yesterday held them up - what can they do about that?
A large chunk of The Open is about tradition which is why courses like The Old still get used.
Weather plays a part in proceedings, always has, always will.
Not sure what else they could have done.....

Is it too much to ask the players/caddies to set off an extra 15 mins and walk to the 10th tee box? A little bit of disruption yes, but that would've been much better than what happened today.

Clear you've not played the Old Lady. 15 minutes they might make the 4th tee!

2 tee start works fine for the Dunhill over the Old Course. They just choose not to do it for the Open because it's not the done thing historically.

It's a pointless discussion though, the R&A could have done hundreds of things differently and it'd still have been wrecked by the weather.

sat here in the GM house in St Andrews we debated whether this Open Championship is doomed...
here's Contributing Ed, Fergus Bisset's take on things

what are your thoughts?

PS its 3.40 and if anything the wind seems to be picking up and we are 2 miles inland

When I read the thread title it was in the voice of Fraser from Dads Army :)

Personally, I just think it's slow going but the weather tomorrow and Monday will be the deciding factor.

The weather is what it is. The wind was forecast but that doesn't mean they could make the course any more 'playable' in such a short time.

The fact that there are so many players within 5 shots if the leader makes for an exciting Open. We should hopefully have half a dozen in with a shout coming down the back 9 on Monday.

This should be called the 'Open All Hours'

Of course its not doomed, we seem to have moved effortlessly out of the 'Tigerfest' era just as we have done when every other player passes their peak. Yes it was disappointing that Rory injured himself but it hasn't detracted from the excitement, we have a Irish amateur performing brilliantly and the worlds best massing at the top, Monday's final round should be a wonderful treat, something to savour and to whet our appetites for next years open

Great to see some of the youngsters stepping up to the plate , these will be our next Ryder cup players , with the older stalwarts on the wane there are some very good players able to take their places

I read this from an American journalist https://uk.news.yahoo.com/column-thanks-player-saved-open-210928714.html who calls the R&A "bumbling", seems to imply that things are not done right "this side of the pond" and amazingly claims one Brooks Koepka "saved The Open" by refusing to putt in unplayable high winds on Saturday morning.
I will leave you to draw your own conclusions, but instead of criticising people over difficult decisions that may or may not have been wrong, I think this particular hack should concentrate on doing his own job a little better and refrain from writing such nonsense that relies on the premise of fantasy and panders to his American readership who he thinks will delight in the "debacle" at the home of golf.
