I played Saturday and although cobditions wasn't the best the golf was good, 9/13 fairways hit but the ones missed were by 2/3 metres tops and not through hooks or slices, but more through alignment from the tee box set up so all in all very good.

But........... Today one of my mates played who hasn't been on the course since August. Now I've always been a longer hitter than him, on all of the par 3's I was atleast 1 club less, when I had my g2 he couldn't get near me but yesterday with an unused  swing for 6 months hd had around 10 yards on my drives.

He's using a 440cc cobra SZ? Model around 10.5 in regular, mine is the 09 burner 460cc 9.5 in stiff.

I can only explain it that he was swinging soft and smooth and the     ball seemed the ball seemed to just explode off the face of he's club, but I was putting so much effort in creaming sweet drives and coming up short.  Both drives were similar in height , but I'm sure he was getting a big more roll.

Could it be that my shaft isn't matching my swing creating too much spin, or us it just that my spec in generally isn't totally suited.

I'm  asking after imurgs thread with spin rates and shaft changes. I can't see his I can be longer with every club in my bag,   Yet my strongest club in my bag I'm short on.

Soggy air, cold balls (ahem!), stiff muscles. All rob you of some distance in the winter. I creamed an 8 iron 133 yards downhill the other day. In the summer that one would have flown the green. If the club worked for you in the summer stick with it....and just start hitting 2 piece harder balls in the winter.

He's using a 440cc cobra SZ? Model around 10.5 in regular,

If he has the word "unlimited" on the club next to the "440" then he's got a non-conforming driver - not that it means much but you could haul him over the coals for still using it... :D

Maybe you're just hitting softer than normal.
If you're worried, then a trip to a Launch Monitor will tell you - and may empty your wallet too!

Mashie, he was using nxt's and I was playing ad333. As far ad I know both are a two piece medium quality ball.

John as above I've already dropped to a two piece ball from my summer choice of dx3.  It's strange because in the summer I'm always ahead, sometimes by 20 yards yet yesterday he was pinging he's sweetspot all day.

Imurg. He's is definitely not an unlimited model.

What I did notice was that he would still get a few yards roll where as I was getting a pitch and stop sort of shot. I've always played a drive that had less roll than others which is why I'm wondering if there is too much spin in my driver ball flight, maybe a launch monitor session in Wednesday's lesson may put my mind at rest

Imurg I think I know what the findings are going to be and there's a few clubs in the spare room taking up funds at the moment. I know a r11 or d910 is going to give me to much to think about with all the adjustment settings. I'm wondering about an r9 or d909 without the adjustment.

The question is, do you need more distance? This time of year it helps but come April when the course starts firming up and the air is warmer you're gonna get plenty of extra distance and you're gonna want accuracy to keep yourself out of the cabbage.

You can lose accuracy chasing distance so if you're happy with what you've got don't worry about anyone else.

P.S The R9 is a great driver

Hawkeye you could be right, on the par 4's yesterday I never had more than a 6i in and around my home track with the exception of 2 holes off the whites requiring a hybrid if the wind is against again a 5/6i is my maximum approach even in the wet. Maybe what you know and can control is a safer option.

I never felt I really buttoned one yesterday, I'm going to play with tee heights again as all of the strikes were slightly higher in the face.

Why worry about how far your mate is hitting it. You can only control your ball. I'm a short hitter anyway and so always play my second shot first. I'd rather be doing it 20 yards behind everyone and take one more than trying to smash it and slicing or hooking it and having to chip out
