Is Life less happy these days

Very true point Gary - so we are all a bunch of miserable so and so's
 
People seem to get more offended these days to the point where one wonders whether they want to be offended or are looking to be offended.

I would say it is a more miserable society but is it any surprise? for instance, look at the drivel that many people watch on tv these days. The soaps, reality tv programs, Jeremy Kyle etc. They all thrive on conflict, controversy and misery. Is it any wonder people are more miserable if this is what they are supposedly entertaining themselves with?

As apposed to people turning up to watch stoning and hangings in the past... ye we are way different now...

Absolutely. As posted elsewhere so many of us are hugely self-centred (not necessarily the same as selfish btw); full of feelings of entitlement and expectation that are usually not met to our satisfaction; and we build and hold resentments. That allied with the fear for the future can develop and that is stoked by the press and media, we are in danger of turning into a nation of miserable and angry discontents. And the truth is that most of us have no idea how to build and maintain our own peace of mind and to remove these feelings.
 
There is more pressure anyhow , some self caused some caused by others , In my humble opinion what brings most people down & causes most stress is Money or lack of it ..

Loadsa reasons , Living beyond your means , pressure of bills , quiet possibly caused by living beyond your means ..

Im less happy in work because we took 2 pay cuts in the bad time but despite some good years there is no giving back or partial giving back , we have idiots in work who are useless , yet we all get treated the same ..

Both these things can sometimes lead to pressure at home , lack of cash & going home in a bad mood from a bad day at work & thats is wrong but is a fact & can lead to unhapiness all round ..


Im lucky in the fact i have a great womam by my side , 3 great kids , & we are all healthy & well , kids are never in bother in school or out of it for that matter , they are happy kids & well behaved ..

So i would say people that are less happy are so because of pressure , maybe unreasonable self caused pressure , but IMO that is whats causing the grumpiness & unhappiness
 
There is one thing we should all have less of and that's bad news or as I call it.......news.
Tv, radio, newspapers and the internet are all guilty of bombarding us with bad news 24/7, but as they say, good news isn't news.
 
life generally, is hugely more happy than I recall it back through the late 50's, 60 -70's. The standard of living is demonstrably better, people have far more disposable income, labour saving devices, better education, less working hours, more holidays, better medical care, internet use - everything that gives a better living standard and more happiness!
 
Too many people.

Increased competition for housing/jobs/money (in fact, all finite resources) gets to us all, whether we like it or not.

It's a rat race.
 
People like to have a little whinge. Most posts in t'other thread were lighthearted and just poking fun at the small things in life that sometimes make us shake our heads. Most people don't actually like to moan about the really important stuff that gets us down. We smile and work our way through them like we always have done.
 
IMO we see a lot of moaning about relatively trivial stuff because most people are actually pretty comfortable, so trivial stuff takes on greater importance.
(Note, I said most, not all)

I don't think you'll see too many people with real, actual, problems getting all worked up over something trivial like the release schedule from taylormade or Apple.

I think there's a lot of intolerance about these days, and a lack of respect for others views - they're even killing people for it more than they've ever done.

How many times on here do we see a hair being split 27 different ways just because someone disagrees with an opinion? People argue about minutiae instead of agreeing with 95% and letting the other 5% slide. How many people have left the forum because someone won't respect the individual's right to that other 5%.

And as bizarre as it may sound, I find myself becoming intolerant of that intolerance and then arguing back... I feel like I'm being sucked into the same mindset.

That said, my mantra has always been "every day is a nice day, but some are nicer than others." After all, the glass is half full.
 
Is it coincidental that an increasingly unhappy, intolerant and resentful society has come around as church attendance and any form of spiritual/religious belief has dropped off - seen at it's simplest level by Sunday becoming 'just another day'.

Times have changed, but Sundays as they were until the late 70s were different; and whether or not you went to church, they gave us all the opportunity to stop, breath and reflect, take stock of the week just gone and the week to come; and for us all to have a moment to think of others not just ourselves, Life today for many is all about self and acquisition; it is utterly relentless - there is no off switch. We are exhausted.

I would say it's about 32 different ways and 90/10.
