Is society turning into a never ending cycle of misery ?

Do people seem to get more irritated than cheerful ?

Are people looking for ways to be offended ?

Just a few questions that me and a family member were discussing last night - it was in response to something I heard on Radio 2 about 500 people complaining about the new Jeykll and Hyde program being out of taste

Then I looked at the forum and more seem to post in the "what irritates you" as opposed to what makes you smile

Are we all miserable buggers these days ? Is life that bad for everyone now

What really irritates me these days, more than ever, is the bad use and ba$tardi$ation of the English language. For example, the use of "Me and a family member..." rather than "A family member and I...", plus American spelling of Programme, the lack of Capital letters in titles and omission of question marks.

Joking aside, the use of "Me and..." does irritate me, we were always taught that you put yourself last in these statements, and it is "I" and not "Me", after all you don't say "Me was discussing..."

:(

I heard a brilliant rule with regards to "Me" or "I". You should be able to take "name and" out, leaving "me" or "I" and the sentence should still make sense. There are times when "me" is right.

I wasn't actually asking what irritates you as we already have a thread but you highlighted the exact issue

I hate it when people use the word , you know , you know , no i don`t know .....................For me life is good , married , my new born daughter and my golf when i do play is good , life is what you make it , the weather has a lot to do with moods as well , nice summer day brings more smiles then a dull winter day ...................EYG

Not for me, it's down to your own circumstances and priorities in life.
Life is way to short to get irritated by grammar nazis😃

Peoples aspirations are greater now and when they can't get what they want, or see other people have, then people feel grumpy. Go back 30-40 years when people had far less, holidayed at home etc then there was less to want. Consumer culture has lot to answer for.

Very good question. In my humble opinion social media is to blame. It's so easy to complain about something remotely. Back in the day you had to complain face to face and people didn't. Now with social media you can complain in a way that everyone sees it but you don't see the result of your complaint meaning there's no checks and balances for your behaviour.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good whinge too. But have to agree the general complaining of society gets my goat.

I don't think there's any more misery around than there used to be, in fact probably less.

Difference is nowadays you can find it at the touch of a button if you want.

The internet has brought everyone closer together, with all it's troubles too. In our grandparents days they had community, and survival in some of the most poor of times that today's society couldn't handle, yet in nearly every picture I see from that time, people are happily going about their business. Streets were filled with happy kids running about with a stick or a football, skipping ropes or chalk. Technology has made people evolve into harbingers of greed and jealousy. You can't get a new car, new plants or work done in your house these days without 3 of your neighbours following suit or doing one better.

People have forgotten how to be content with what they have. We're always striving for something better, because we're fed all this rubbish on-line and on the big 50" box on the wall. I don't even know half my neighbours names and I've been there 3 years.

Everyone just seems so involved in their own wee world and sod it to the rest of them. A company announces a product and before you know it, ten thousand people buy it and tell everyone else on twitter. Your sat with version 1 and all these people are buying version 4 and it leaves you feeling left out. Actually version 1 works just as good.

I also blame social media I can safely say I feel most miserable when im on the internet or watching TV.

There is so much crap on the box and internet it drags you down.

When I was young I was out all day every day wether at school or at our social football or running club.

If I could stay off the internet and watch less TV I believe I would be a lot happier.

However I have got the most amazing wife and kids and that makes me extremely happy.
I would also like less aches and pains because they really do hold you back and you start feeling sorry for yourself.

I cant complain I have a good life, however I do complain and moan but its usually about others.

There is a saying "surround yourself with positive people and you will be positive" so perhaps that's what I need to do a bit more.

All about resistance to change if you ask me. We are all pre-programmed to prefer the status quo. As life changes at a quicker and quicker pace I think the potential for irritation rises almost exponentially and with it the potential to moan and be unhappy about "stuff".

The internet, text speak, social media? We'd hardly heard of all that only 20 years ago. Thing is, it's only irritating if you let it all get to you........I hate misuse of "your" rather than "you're", "should of" instead of "should have" but I can't change it. As others have said, life is too short.

I really hope not but I think part of it is that the internet gives people a place to complain where they would have just moaned at their wife before now. I have commented vehemently in the past the types of thread your talking about. Those who want to talk endlessly about how bad things are or what upsets them. This forum is not a good barometer for the country as a whole as the average age is so high on here and it seems that there is a lot of people in rural communities... to put a label to them... Miserable so and so`s. On top of that they are golfers of old... It was the fashion to moan and cry when they grew up in there backwater golfing community.

How long did your post last about nice things that happened to you today or whatever it was... No fun in that for most people on here.

I have a job I love, my direct family are beyond wonderful, I play better golf than I used to and I have enough money to buy a pint at the end of the round. We have our ups and downs like any humans but in general the cards fall in my direction. I have got tooth ache... Maybe I should write a post about it....

Folks are probably just as unhappy (happy) as they ever were, its just that they think everyone else has to know it and they have platforms to do it

I was thinking along a similar vain this morning. Is the world now too accessible? I went to mexico but didn't go to Chichen Itza as I just wasn't wowed by the prospect of seeing yet more ruins.

I've been to Rome, Athens, Egypt etc and it seems the world is just getting too accessible for things to be "new" or "different".

I guess as the internet makes everything so easy to access there's less in general to be wowed and happy about.

As humans we enjoy learning and discovery and this is happening less and less, because quite frankly we know what we need to know thanks to the internet.

What did you learn recently that cheered you up?

Spot on

And the thread I started was a perfect example

More people finding things to whinge about instead of things that make someone happy
