Is it wrong to putt cack handed?

I tried putting left hand below right a few years ago, after I developed the putting yips with a conventional grip. It worked up to a point, but I found it difficult to get any feel for distance. Ended up using the claw grip. Use whatever (legal) method works for you, and don't worry what it looks like or what other players think about it! :)

Yep Del I agree

I have flirted with cack handed and it worked to a degree but I now am conventional

I tried the claw grip but couldn't get along with it at all

Genuine question, are there any "illegal" methods of holding it, or is it only illegal to anchor/straddle the line?

At the moment you are not allowed to putt croquet style between the legs, which is what rule 16-1e is all about. Sam Snead used this method for a while to overcome his yipping problem. After it was banned he putted side-saddle. Anchoring the putter will be against the rules after January 2016, but isn't at the moment.

in the hands, no.

Brill, thanks for that. Was wondering if there was some obscure rule!

Pretty sure its illegal to put whilst holding a flag stick that rests on the ground. Fine to putt one handed with the bottom of the flagstick off the ground.

Nope that OK too. You're not allowed to use the flagstick to support yourself but its ok if it touches the ground

Lots of pros do it. I even tried chipping that way (my short game woes were that bad) but I didn't like, had no confidence and it didn't really work. Same was true when I've tried putting that way. Linear method for chipping for me (it may look weird but working even off wet winter lies) and conventional putting with a lot of V-easy practice work. Nice and simple in 2015

Went to the practice hole tonight, and tried out the Dave Pelz chipping method off the back ankle and turning your feet to the hole .....
What?

Anyway, putting cack-handed works for some people, so don't be afraid to use it. I found it sends the ball VERY straight but I lack touch/feel. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes it's not. In the end I had to learn to keep the right hand more passive which did the trick for me. A good putting drill is to putt with the left hand only.
