Having just subscribed to GM for the year after reading a few articles in some of the magazines, it was quite clear, early on that I might be a bit odd. I have taken the plunge at my local club (Romanby GC, Northallerton) some 24 months ago and gone from 24 down to 14 on an old set of something or others (3 - SW) and a huge amount of support from the 2 club Pro's (Richard Wood & Steve Pearce - thank you).
With single figures aspirationally in sight I decided to refresh the bag, to ensure that it was only the idiot on the end of the club that could be to blame. I then proceeded to torture Richard for 6 months in trialling irons, woods, and wedges to find the right combo of club, shaft and grip. In the end we decided that Callaway woods on graphite with a stiff flex on driver & 3 wood, with regular shaft on the 5 wood (to get it up...) Taylor Made CB Tour irons on a Project X rifled shaft & calloway X series jaws 50, 54 & 58 degree wedges were the optimum fit. I must say that I am exteremely thankful to the Pro's for their patience, advice and support, but can't help noticing when I look around that I am the only person with a complete 'mixed bag'? Is this normal?
Winter has been good to get the clubs and swing going and have regularly played to 12 as a rule, so I can't wait for the season to start to get stuck in. Even if I am a bit odd...
