Just sold my G10 Driver & 3 wood, the idea was to replace the 3 with a matching i15 for my new driver.
But I took it out of the bag as soon as I had sold it and played on Thursday and didn't really miss it at all.
Playing again tomorrow and have no worries about not going out with it again.
I'm getting on fine with my new driver (when I hit it it goes, when I don't it don't but nothing new there) and I am comfortable with my 5 wood for anything 200-220 like a long par 3 or second shot on long par 4, par 5. I lost confidence with the 3 some time ago and very rarely hit it off the tee, hardly at all off the deck.
So do I replace it, or save my money?

:D :D :D

Save it for now.
See how you get on and if you feel you need it after a few outings then go for it.
If your 5 wood goes 200-220 then you've got a club that'll get you there on longer holes and tighter tee shots.
I've got a 4 wood to do the job of the 3 and 5. Maybe you 5 does a similar job?

If your 5 wood is good for you then I guess there is no need for a 3 wood for now, so maybe worth hanging on. I tried the i15 3 wood and have to say it was awesome.

Ah sorry it wasnt meant to lol

If you hit the 3 wood well, it is a great tool to have in the bag, either off the tee or from the fairway.

:)

I used to be able to collar my 3 wood ok but have just lost a bit of confidence with it. My favourite was my old Callaway Steelhead+ which I think I've still got up in the loft somewhere. I may well bring that out of retirement to see if the old girl still works for me.
;)

I borrowed a set of clubs earlier in the year when I was in england and they had a callie steelhead in there, great club, straight as anything for me!!
You have nothing to lose I guess!

The other way to look at it is, if you pull 3 wood from the bag, what other slots need filled? and would it be more beneficial to fill the other slot?

If you play different courses then a variety of clubs may come in handy but if you just play your own track then you can build a set to match.

I would ditch the 3 wood and get a 60 degree wedge. If you dont want(cant use ;)) a 60 degree wedge then keep the money and buy yourself something of use......maybe lessons ;)

I use the 5 wood, its a bit straighter than the 3 wood, but mega versatile. Only use it once or twice a round, though to be fair my course is not that long. I use the 5w as a rescue when in the hay as I use my 3 Iron, rather than rescue. Where my 3 wood is simply hauled around the course and rarley used.

TBH when its change toime I will prob go for a small headed 4W - till then 5W, sod the 3W.

Gotta be honest and I rarely use mine either. If you feel you don't need it then don't carry it. Get an extra wedge or some new trousers! :D

Dont have one either Rob, I use a 19 hybrid for anything like that but never reach a par 5 in 2 anyway so dont think a 3 wood would help me.

Replace it. You might find a club that gives you back some of that lost confidence.

Typical Jamie. He beat me to it.

If you used to be happy with your 3w search around until you find one that gives you back your mojo.

In terms of what you 'need' there are loads of clubs you could, in theory, do without. But you don't want to.

When you find a 3w you want, you wont even pause for a second.

:D

I often go out without it. a) it's not often I need "exactly" a 3 wood to a green b) I can use a 5 wood off the tee on short holes (and frequently do) c) it's only a 8/10 I'll hit it sweet off the deck anyway.

Having said that, I hit a 3w (2nd shot) to 7 foot on the S.I. 1 yesterday.

Mostly, I just use it for risky medium length holes (off the tee) and distance munching on long holes where I'm not using some crazy RG strategy.

If I'm 250-300 from a green, there's little advantage in hitting a 3 wood for me, so usually I don't.

Keep the money...

I only use driver and 5 wood (both Ping G10) and don't need a three wood. Saves space for a wedge...

I read somewhere (I think Golf digest) that most amateurs don't need a three wood and are better off with a 4/5 wood and driver.

I have the three, but I hardly use it.

I have just bought a 2 hybrid, 16 degree.

It still has the distance but is much easier to hit, tee and off the deck!
