Irons dilemma

You know this is something that bugs me about golf, I know it has been brought up before but I think people get too hung up about clubs being aimed at different handicappers.

It isnt set in stone and its just a guide. In general, the industry assumes (and is right most of the time but not always) that lower handicap players are better ball strikers.

But, I have played with a lot of people who cant strike the ball aswell as me who play of single figures. They Bang a drive away, approach with no real accuracy but then proceed to knock it close and hole out everytime. They dont use AP2's or mp62's etc. They use Cavity backed x20 irons or the Taylormade versions. If they didnt they wouldn't be as low as they were because they would be in alot more trouble from the fairway, or the duffed approaches of a 'players' irons would leave them scrambling for bogeys.

Buying better irons wont make you a better player, it will make you worse if you can't use them. Buying a forgiving iron is more likely to save you more shots than loose you any.

Unless you want too, and can shape the ball and feel it is necessary to get around your course, then why would you need them?

Buy what you hit best and easiest.

Goodluck!

The biggest difference between a good solid 9 handicap player and a 2 handicap player is their short game. Anybody who can hit the ball a reasonable length, and reasonably straight will get down to 11 or 12. Getting below that will require a short game that is reliable and will get you out of scrapes. I wouldn't worry about the irons I am playing, I would be practicing and improving my chipping and putting and any expenditure on clubs to get lower would be on wedges that suited me.

My thoughts exactly. If the OP wants to get down to single figures a lot of short game and putting practice is the way forward. I really do not think going from 14 to 9 is going to mean that he needs to buy another set of sticks.

The ones that the fitter reccommends should be fine. There are plenty of great players using GI clubs.Use what suits you.
