Irish Open _ AT&T

I'm a bit confused about the whole McIlroy doldrums stuff ?

He has played in 10 events - has had 7 top 25 finishes 4 top 10's. The other three events he was 26th , 27th and one missed cut

It's early season and he was just getting into form , just needed the putts to drop.

Thats not a trivial 'just' though. His problem is that he is not a great putt dropper. At least by the standards of other top world golfers. His long game won him this IO - and a fantastic long game it is when it is switched on, and that is pretty often. His putting is rarely top level, and his average putting form is very ordinary.

It did and it must have been the over riding emotion although when you saw it again from distance there was a little fist pump.

Looking good for the Ryder Cup with him and Rory winning, Willett with his major, it would be good now if Poulter found some form.

A bit off topic but each week when I see the screen graphics of the players in qualifying position for the Ryder Cup, the US team looks far more formidable with greater strength in depth/consistency

Don't want to say it but I think its their year

Many Ryder Cups have shown that despite the US looking far more formidable etc it means nothing when it comes to the Ryder Cup - Europe has consistently beaten the US despite at times having players ranked a lot higher than the US but Europe will always be able to bond as a team where as the US have managed it once in the last 5 Ryder Cups.

Sure, but it is still what lets him down, and putting is what wins tournaments. So think he needs to get 'hot' with the putter in order for him to win any tournament on either tour.

Hope you're right, I just think the form/consistency levels of the European players could easily be described as spikey in recent months so if they're on form it'll be close, if a couple are in a little dip however... And surely the US will realise their error one of these days re team spirit
 
The US need to get in some of the young guns who are not damaged. Too many of their old guard are already beaten before they start. There are plenty of them and I'm with Slab here, this year could be a worry.

The lack of team spirit isn't something than can be easily corrected though. Its all down to the individuals and their attitude toward their team mates. The Americans have tried all the bonding stuff before and it just doesn't work for them. Also, look at how it went wrong in 2008 for Europe with Faldo in charge and the supposed tension between Harrington and Garcia.

Looking at the Europeans I think a number are in better form than US

Day is dominating the US tour with not many US players consistently challenging

A number of Europeans in good form as well
