International driving insurance

So going out stateside and staying with an old friend. Was planning to hire a car to drive around. I can drive on the wrong side as I used to live stateside a long time ago.
So my friend from the great state of Texas goes .. I have a spare truck (!!!) and you can use it if you have international insurance.
So any thoughts on how to get one for a private car (as against a rented car) . I don’t think my local direct line type insurer will cover it..

I thought the UK license was enough? I know when Ive hired cars in Trump landall Ive needed is my UK license, although they did query it as I still have the original paper one

As said in the opening post renting a car is different than borrowing a car abroad. Renting has insurance included. If it is similar to the UK then it is the owner of the vehicle owner who adds a driver to their policy as you cannot easily insure a car that you don't own.

1st stop is to try your UK insurer and ask for cover to be extended to the appropriate country. It may mean third party only .

I would just hire a car. US insurance policies are more expensive than UK policies, and as soon as you don't have a US license half the companies will turn you away and the rest will load the premium as if you were a driver with no experience. Renting a car probably won't be any more expensive, and if you have any kind of mechanical breakdown or accident, the hire company will deal with it, and you won't create an awkward situation with your friend.
