Improving strike

When learning guitar, a commonly used technique is to try to play a passage two steps faster than you urgently can. Then when you go back to one step faster, it seems easy, and you e gained a step in speed.

When learning to rock climb, I used to try to make moves I knew were well beyond me, but then when I went back to something that was just a bit beyond me previously, it now seemed easier.

I want to improve the quality of my strike with my huge topline, deep cavity back beginners irons. Is it worth me buying a second hand single iron in club that’s well beyond me (something like and mp-32 8i), so that when I come back to my Wilsons, it seems a bit easier?

Do you think that might work?

I sit worth a go for about the £30 it would cost?

These have a bit of perimeter weighting and were top of the line when introduced.

Sadly I don’t have space for more than one set of clubs... the ones I have have to live in the car.

Still use mine to warm up with at the range. Can tell very quickly when you aren't swinging it properly and great feedback. If we go stir crazy I might have to sneak on the practice ground and do a video

Same for me, 10 balls with that before going on to a normal 8 iron. It definitely helps.

A couple of years ago I had the same theory as you. I bought myself a 1 iron thinking if I practiced enough with that then anything less would be easy. Worked to a certain degree but not like I hoped it would.

I tried the same thing in the 80s. Got a perimeter weighted one (Wilson 1200GE) to work as a driving iron for a little while but needed a perfect, flat or slightly uphill lie on the fairway.
Couldn't get a blade model to do anything more useful than stoking a fireplace.

I can’t find anywhere with the DST Compressor in stock, so I’ve ordered an 8i blade, jus to give it a go. It’ll probably just frustrate and not lead to any improvement, but it’s only £15 off eBay.

I‘ll keep my eyes open for the compressor, though.
