• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Im in for a treat tomorrow !

If you are put off by what other players are doing (searching for balls, taking lots of shots per hole) then you aren't doing a great job of focussing on your own game. Some might argue that you are using high handicappers as an excuse.

I'd rather play and have a pleasant time with people out there to enjoy it but who still try their best to win, rather than a sulky low handicapper who thinks a monthly medal or even a qualifier is the biggest thing in the world and is surly and doesn't recognise my presence.

I played today and didn't lose a single ball and wasn't zig-zagging across the fairways either.

It's a bit annoying at times when reading about high handicappers that are criticised for scoring well in a stableford comp. and in the next breath they are a distraction to the better players.

Not all high handicappers are hackers and can often play at a reasonable level most of the time. What usually lets them down is their lack of consistency, compared to the better players. So give us a break guys :)

Rant over :)

Don’t kid yourself Homer, I know a few sulky high handicappers who thinks a monthly medal or even a qualifier is the biggest thing in the world.

I'll play golf with anyone, it never puts me off. If I can't focus then I blame myself and not the company. Generally I couldn't care less if they chatter on the tee, walk on my putting line or even if I can see them out of the corner of my eye on my backswing - if I don't play the shots then it ain't gonna happen. I generally know prior to teeing off whether I'm going to play well or not and it would take a lot to upset any good rythm I might be having.

I think that all club competitions should be drawn and you shouldn't be allowed to play with your mates unless they happen to come out of the hat. It encourages club spirit and stop the often seen 'mates rules' that I have seen on ocassions!!

If you play enough then everyone at the club will be your mate and you needn't worry about the draw too much :D

Anyway,,, how did you get on, was it a 'treat'?

Crikey....hornets nest or what ???

As I said before, I'm happy to play with anyone, but in Comps, I find it more beneficial to play with lower guys, not that I always do.
Robobum's insinuation that I in turn may be a distraction to the Scratch player is very wide of the mark, as it was the 5H/C lad who paired with me, and the Scratch player who chose to join us later, seeing the spare place with us.

Did I find it 'inspirational' ? Oh yes..... after 9, I was +2 Gross, as was the 5, and Justin, off scratch, was +1.

See my other post regarding the end result, which slightly tainted the day, but I still maintain, that for me, playing with similar Handicapped players, or lower, concentrates the mind more and provides less distractions.

Have to say that a few years ago I played a Medal with a 28'er who in reality was about a 48'er!
My game went completely to pieces, never being able to get into any sort of rhythm as we had to look for balls almost every shot as well as needing a degree in Further Maths to tot up his score. Didn't blame the other guy, its not his fault he wasn't very good, but it did throw me right off. But he turned into a decent mate and we played regularly after that and I helped him get to be a genuine 25.
Which made for much shorter games!!

Chris - the insinuation was a leg pull unlike your dismissal of 28h'cappers, I mean how dare they be allowed out to play in a medal....what next? women on the course too??

If Bobmac had the same attitude he would be bereft of pro am partners, the very people who subsequently stump up a proportion of the money he then plays for. Learning to play with all sorts (not Bertie Bassett) is all part of this great game for me. If you can't cope with a couple of people not playing perfect golf then you don't stand much chance when the pressure really comes on if you're challenging for a big trophy!!
