Playing a medal tomorrow with 2 of the new generation of very good golfers at our Club, so hoping it will inspire me to perform as well.

18yr old off 5, and a 22yr old off scratch.

Quite pleased with my drops to 9.8 this year so far, but these boys are a different league again !!!
The guy off scratch uses a 2iron thats so thin you could cut yourself on it, but manages to fly it like a frickin bullet - 240+yds !!

Looking forward to it

I love playing with low handicap golfers, it is an education, and some times forces me to raise my game. Sadly, sometimes not though.

Chris, Does your club pair you up with different players every time you enter the club comps or do you just play with your usual friends and arrange your own pairings ?

Barney, No - a start sheet goes into the Pro shop the week before and you can book any time/partners you like etc.
The lad who is 5 asked if I wanted to join him again, so I did, and Justin, off scratch, has slotted in with us too.

Personally, I'd hate any system that pairs you up, - couldnt stand that at all.

What's wrong with being paired up in comps? Surely you get to know more members this way, and makes for a friendly club.

Well, sure, I'd meet and get to know more members perhaps.

But, and no offence to those of you that have higher handicaps, but I dont want to be paired with a couple of fella's off 24 & 28 perhaps, who despite being 'great chaps and great company' perhaps, spend all afternoon zig zagging across the course, looking for balls, etc etc.
Very distracting and not conducive to maintaing concentration in my experience.

Sorry, but its true.

(Oh, and our club is friendly anyway )

Yeah, I do see what your saying, and please don't think I was having a go. Of course I'm sure your club is a friendly one.

I have a handicap of 26 and often played with much lower handicappers and spent plenty of time looking for their balls  Also most hit longer than me and therefore sometimes further in the thick stuff. So it does work both ways at times. I'd go as far as to say that I don't hold their game up any more than they do mine.

Golfmmad.

All our competitions are drawn and I have no problem with playing with high handicappers. I don't find they put me off at all and in fact are normally pretty quick. The first sign of trouble and they play a provisional. A quick look and either play the original or wander off and keep going.

I've played with some low single figure guys and its been four hours of hell as they are so into their own game. No chat, endless practice swings, looking at putts from every angle etc. Yes they are good and have decent swings but I like to enjoy my round and my partners company irrespective of how well we play.

I played in the monthly medal at Highwoods last Sunday. Young lad of about 18 was put in our threeball, he played off 4. Mike (the pro) advised me before we went out that he was a good player and belted it miles....that was an understatement!! He smashed one off the first tee it went like an exocet missile! I'm not short off the tee, but this lad was one of the longest, and sweetest, hitters of the ball I have ever had the pleasure of playing with.
Our 13th is a tough par 4, measures 423 yards off the whites and is uphill all the way. I very rarely get on in two, smallest club I have ever hit into it was a 5 iron and that was after hitting a "Sunday best" drive.
This young lad hit driver, sand wedge! Birdied it too (it was the only birdie scored on that hole during the competition). I usually play a bit better when I am playing with lower handicapped golfers, but this young lad completely screwed up my game because I was subsconciously trying to keep up with him and in reality had absolutely no chance. Any tempo that I may have had went out the window which saw me cocking up at least 3 holes that I usually play well. He ended up shooting a gross 73.
As nice a guy as he was I don't want to play with him again!!

That's a bit harsh! Did you take the game up and play off 10 straight away then?

I know what Chris is saying but I have no problem playing with anybody. I'll play golf with anyone once. You can put up with anyone for 4 hours and you don't have to play with them again...
I get a buzz from playing with high handicappers as when I hit a screaming drive or a towering iron or a quality chip they all look at me as if I'm Tiger - great for the ego!!

i dont play in competition, however i play with someone from work who plays off 5 and it has had a massive effect on my game. i have to agree with some peoples comments about spending time searching for the low handicapper balls.

I didnt mean it to be harsh, and socially, I'm happy to play with anyone.
In fact, one of my closest buddies/playing partners is off 27, and has been for years. Playing Skins against him on a weekday evening is a tough one & my game has to be 'on' to beat him, but in that situation, it doesnt matter.

But in a Medal round, one that qualifies for our yearly 'Order of Merit' table, I just wouldnt want the distractions that Higher handicappers can bring.

Sorry if thats harsh to some.

" searching for the low handicapper balls."

????? Surely you mean highhandicappers ?

I know I dont lose that many off 10, and doubt anyone lower than me loses any more.
However, Ive played with people off 20+ who have lost 3 or 4 in one round.

Give me two 28 h'cappers who are good company, enthusiastic, eager to learn and enjoy the game and have a nice bit of banter & conversation on the way round any day of the week.

If somebody scores over 100, that has no bearing on my game whatsoever and is looking for someone's ball every now and then such a chore. I'd certainly hope they'd help look for mine if the tables were turned.

There is a guy who posts on another forum who rants on about what he calls "semi pro" golfers. Ones that have all the talk and think they are the dog's but in actual fact aren't all that good. I've always argued against him that I've never met anyone like that, perhaps he's got a point after all.

Playing tomorrow morning in a board comp with a guy off of 8 and a guy off of 15. They'll be bloody good company too, the guy off of 15 can't putt to save his life and will 3 and 4 putt all day long, will that have any bearing on my score?? Absolutley not.

Perhaps you may need to think that the guy off of scratch may be cursing the fact that he's been paired with a cat2 hacker.

Reminds me of the old Two Ronnies sketch, "I look down on him because he's a 28h'cap but I look up to him because he's scratch"

Ronnie C. a 28 h/c ?

John Cleese scratch ?

Now that's a pro celebrity game I'd like to see. :)

All I mean is when you started, didn't you play, enjoy and learn from better players?

It could be construed as rather "cliquey" imho, and perhaps something that would put off lesser players from competing, if they are to be "distraction" to the better members?

Interesting thread though, I have to say. Maybe I'd feel differently if I wasn;t so shockingly bad!!

:) :) :)
Well said.
I guess some would prefer to play with Cat I players who treat it like The Open and dont talk all the way round
It takes all sorts :)
