If you could change the national Anthem...

So have I got this right
You English guys want a tune called 'The Liberty Bell' written by an American as your national anthem.

You could have the other Souza march.....for those that can't whistle............'Ere we go, 'Ere we go, 'Ere we go.

Strange indeed Doonie - not a lot of imagination - or maybe choice - presenting itself for an independent England. Replacing a southern states Negro spiritual with a northern states miltary band march. So I must be creative on their behalf - erm...erm...something from Mary Poppins perhaps?

Jerusalem is a grand tune and grand words - but is it really a National Anthem for a modern England? In the same way that Flower of Scotland (played and sung as a lament as Roy Williamson wrote it) is a fine song with fine words but it is not a national anthem for Scotland.

Truth is - I think the key to a new national anthem - for Scotland as well as England is to get a well know tune - or tune that resonates - and give it (new) words.

So for England 'Greensleeves' is a very well know song but the words are naff for a national anthem. Give it new words and I think you could have a decent national anthem for England. So here is Vaughan Williams 'Fantasia on Greensleeves' - choose which ever segments you wish - do a 'mash up' of the segments as it's too long - add you own words.

That is a very good idea.....seriously.

For Scotland the words to Highland Cathedral work quite well, trouble is the tune wos rote by The Germans.
Never been a great fan of FoS, Still like Scotland the Brave but totally in appropriate words.

The original and best (if you can put out of your mind the rant it has mutated into)

"Swords of a thousand men" by Temople tudor.

No airs and graces, just a great uplifting, raucous tune, a militaristic feel and no kowtowing to political correctness.

Imagine that blaring out after we win gold in the dressage (not as GB).

Great to dance to after 15 pints, as well.

I used to go to The Corries Usher Hall concerts when there was three of them. They were good but not as good as The Clancy Brothers. The IRA managed to bring their career to an abrupt halt.

Which may or may not be fun - but it is never going to happen. Come on Engerlish - realistic suggestions? Are there any. Go Greensleeves - even the rhythm the word is sung Green..Sleeves fits nicrely with Eng...gland.

Chorus

England was all my joy
England was my delight,
England was my heart of gold,
And where but my country England.
