If you ask a stupid question...

I'm sure I'll get some blunt answers and yes I know it does sound a bit stupid but is purely down to budgetary restraints (pretty tight at the mo) so here goes...

I am fairly young, relatively fit and currently carry my bag but I can definitely see the benefits of trolleys (as has been discussed in the past on the forum). I am thinking of buying one of the cheap fold-up pull trolleys for about £20 or so in AG to last me what will be my first full year of golf. My question is whether you absolutely have to have a cart bag for it or whether a medium-sized stand bag will fit on and is able to be strapped on as a makeshift option?

I realise that its not what they are designed for but I'll probably be reluctant to do it if I also have to shell out for a new cart bag. I thought it could be a cheap option until I can afford a cart bag and to get me through my first full year of golf?

Your thoughts (and probably mocking) would be appreciated!

Thanks

You'll get no mocking from me jonesuk.

Perfectly valid question mate imo.

The answer is you can use a stand bag with a trolley.....I do.
The only thing, you'll probably have to mount the bag on its side to securely fit it. OK, you'll probably lose the use of the pocket(s) closest to the trolley but it hasn't been that much of a problem to me.

I actually own a cart bag as well (had it given) it's fairly old and perfectly serviceable but I still tend to use my stand bag regardless of whether I carry, use my pull or powered trolley.

I do it if I've got my carry bag and I'm feeling like a wimp and want a trolley.

Just make sure your straps are keeping the bag on and away you go.

Might be worth investing in a pair of strong bungee cords.

I know lots who just put their carry bags onto a trolley whenever they wish to pull etc, looks fine to me.

Go for it, and yes, it is easier !

I used a carry bag for most of the last year on a trolley until the bag eventually started to fall apart (this was not because of the trolley, the bag was just very old), so no problems using a carry bad with a trolley as long as you make sure it is well secured with bungees.

Thats great, thanks for your replies!

That is what I thought as well but being new to golf I didn't want to commit a huge 'faux-pas'!

Seems silly to have to buy a cart bag as well because I think even with a trolley I will probably still carry a fair bit anyway, probably decided on my mood on the day.

Cheers

Not a stupid question at all!

I tend to put it on with the big side pockets which holds my waterproofs against the trolley so the other side is free for all the gubbins related to golf.

Will make sure I get some bungee's and make sure its strapped on properly then but all seems fine then! Thought I'd have a few funny responses... Seems much easier for me (I will carry sometimes, trolley other times) just to have one bag and strap it on if I'm feeling lazy.

Rob - Thanks for that, I'll look into those trolleys that can accommodate stand bags.

Yeah theres a large amount of poeple i see doing exactly that...and it would be hugh advantage if you turned up to play a course and trolleys weren't allowed that day.

I used to do this.
only thing I'd suggest is make sure your bag is strapped tight, otherwise it will shift, you'll be hunting for your clubs - minor but irritating.

bungees might not be tight enough, and will slacken over time.

Not a silly question at all. Don't be afraid to ask whatever is on your mind golf related (or out of bounds section if non golf) and you'll always get an answer. I think a carry bag should work pretty well as I've seen plenty of members at my club do the same thing

All you need is a couple of bungies, Ive done it myself. i had a stand bag and a newer bag, so I cut the stand off the standbag and it fitted perfect to the trolley, couple of bungies round it and away I went, later I got straps and perminently fixed it to trolley as I have a big enough car for it all in one, now its out of the car, open up and Im away wheels already fixed. :D

Its a bugger when there is a trolley ban and I have to carry, all that undoing and fixing straps :(

There is always one, so I guess it is me. Carry bags on trolleys is a bit pikey. Oops, said it. Damn.

I am not a big fan of pull trolleys. I have had one for 20 years and used it about 10 times. Pulling a trolley twists your back, and can do a bit of damage (if, like me you suffer from back/neck problems). Given a choice of being fit and carrying, I would take that option. Carrying is liberating, as you can always walk direct to your ball, climbing through hedges, over ditches, past the 'white lines', etc.

Electric trolleys are next, push trolleys 3rd, and last in the order are pull trolleys, whatever bag you put on them.

Murph beat me to it.

There is no problem with putting a carry bag on a trolley but, if you are going to pull it, watch your back - particularly uphill.

Golf is one of the most unnatural sports for body movement (basically head and feet in the same place while the body rotates between them) but walking uphill with your spine twisted and one arm behind you pulling a weight can cause all sorts of problems. That's why even at my tender years I either carry using a double strap or use an electric trolley.

I didn't realise the damage you could do to your back witha pull trolley untill I joined the Forum. One of the first posts I looked at made this very point - may even have been Murph if my memory serves - but I went out next day and got a 3-wheel push one. Graduated to an electric now and won't go back.
