being new to golf, albeit enthusiastically acquiring as much knowledge as possibel as quickly as possible, i'm in a bit of a conundrum about Ian Poulter...i can't make up my mind whether i like him or think he's a massive b@llend!

the reason i raise this is a) slow day at work b) found out he's a fellow arsenal fan abd c) just had a look at his clothing range and it's an absolute shocker...the all pink uniform for his recent win was almost inexcusable!

thoughts?

I think Ian comes across as a bit arrogant because he is actually over compensating. He was a 4 or 5 handicapper when he turned pro, had no great amateur career and was not one of the players expected to be a great. So, I think when he looks at Paul Casey and Luke Donald, who were always tipped for the top, he sees himself as still having a lot to prove.

He is also smart enough to know that some players lose form and disappear, so he is diversifying with the fashion and all that stuff. Could be a smart move.

Overall, I wish him well, and think he is probably less of a prick than many think. Despite being an Arsenal fan.

I'm relatively new as well, and at first I didn't like him.
he came across as a bit full of himself.
But after hearing him speak on his website and some other tv shows, I began to realise that the 'arrogance' bit really only comes out when it relates to his golf.
And as I've seen him play you begin to notice it.
When he's playing well he's striding around the course like a demon, full of self belief, when he isn't playing well he begins to slump a bit.
He's one of those sportsman that 'needs' to talk himself up to reach his own potential.
And so now I'm a convert, and I actively cheer the guy on and as for the wacky clothes?...well I'd rather have wacky than these pumped up assholes at golf clubs that stand their demanding you wear a shirt and tie into the clubhouse with a look on their face as if you've just climbed out of a trash heap

At least he generates interest in the game. Seems you either love him or hate him. Whichever, he is certainly more entertaining than the typical golf pro, especially on the USPGA.

Despite him being an Arsenal fan, I like Poulter! Yes he is confident and therefore he does come over as arrogant, but I personally like that as it shows that he believes in his own ability. Besides, I believe that you need a lot of confidence and arrogance to be successful - a number of top sportsmen / women have that (with the possible exception of Roger Federer who just seems to have supreme confidence in his own ability rather than arrogance!!)

I think his performances at the Open at Birkdale, the Ryder Cup at Valhalla, and his WGC Matchplay win show just what a good player he is when he is on form and playing to his ability.

As for his clothing, I don't think it's that bad and 9 times out of 10 looks good.

His clothes are great. Brighten the place up, even though I’d never wear them. I like him and I think he’ll give the Masters a real shake. @ 30/1 he’s a worth a couple of quid each way imo.

I think he is great, adds to the game. It is said too much about all sports but there are not enough characters these days.

I think the gold outfit was possibly a step too far.

Like what's been said earlier, I think he just has extreme belief in his own ability and self confidence. I can see how it appears arrogant but if you can't say to yourself that you can compete with tiger and the other top players then mentally your not strong enough and won't beat them.

I do like him, his clothes is a bit OTT but if your good enough then he can pull it off.

I get the impression he doesn't really do a lot with/for the fans. He doesn't seem appreciative of them as much as others when they clap him... Or is it only me seeing that???

Despite being an Arsenal fan.

oi!

Don't get y'er knickers in a twist, or things might get a little Messi
:)

bom bom tsch...fortunately in a blonde moment I booked a golf lesson at the same time as the match last night and missed it. recorded it, but when i came in after golf and caught the final score i watched Shameless instead :o

Roger Federer is the most arrogant tennis player there is! long since gone from self confidence to arrogance, of course being teh greatest player to ever pick up a racket probably greased those wheels somewhat...

seems Poulters fashion taste is a bit of a hit?! i thought he might have been channelling Rodney Dangerfield as a design consultant :p

I think you need a bit of arrogance to get to the top,i like that.I also admire him for the clothes he wears as most of us would like to try them but havnt got the balls,i know if i wore something like him i would get crucified. If everyone on the tour was the same it would be very boring.

I get the impression he doesn't really do a lot with/for the fans. He doesn't seem appreciative of them as much as others when they clap him... Or is it only me seeing that???

Check out his twitter site he's always giving stuff away. I guess he's just got his "gameface" on when he's playing.

Never could stand him but he's gone up in my estimation of late.

I didn't use to like him and thought his arrogance outweighed his ability. However his performance in the RC and push up the world rankings since have changed my opinion. I'm not a fan of the clothes but do like some of the shoe designs. I think there is a place in the game for a showman. Remember Doug Sanders? He was the first to wear bright coloured trousers on tour (he got some form of sponsorship deal to do so). What about Payne Stewart. How loud were his clothes but a decent golfer and a gent. At least Poulter is fairly dignified in his approach to the game now and there are fewer foot in mouth incidents.

I don't think he is arrogant at all. I think he is not that confident, possibly a bit shy, and uses this persona to project the image that he is this confident, loud, go getting character. To me, it is all an act. It helps him play golf, but I bet when he gets home, he takes it off, like a coat.

He's allegedly coming to the course where HID works later in the year. She's quite excited about it. I think she quite likes him. Apparently Mrs P was there making the arrangements a few weeks ago in a shiny new ferrari and looked quite glam

Use to hate him but after the Ryder Cup I cant help but like him. Especially over the Masters with £10 EW on him!
