played in a corporate comp yesterday and won with 40 points. the course suited me as it was tight but short. not wanting to blow my own trumpet but i dont struggle for ditance off the tee and having looked at the yardage decided to leave my driver and hybrids in the car. so armed with nothing more than more than a 5 iron i played a great game. all the other guys where spraying their drivers about and i was just wacking my 5 iron. all my shots where lost on the greens that had just been sanded.

i was in the last group, when i entered the club house it was like a western theme, like a cowboy walking into a bar. the place stopped dead. the organiser stood up and said 'what did u get, what did you get''. when i revealed my 40 the whole bar erupted with jives, booing and ''bandit, bandit''.

i am a 23 handicap and i walked into the club house on air having a the game of my life. i left feeling crap and anoyed. works out the nearest score was 34. cant people just be happy for someone?

Wish I had the confidence to hit 5 iron of every tee... would probably fat/thin half of 'em.

Well played though, 40pts isn't exactly severe... enjoy it.

Shame for you to have your big moment spoilt- playing off 23 you are most probably at the "rapid improvers" stage. I won a few things at that stage with embarrassingly high scores and i played in plenty of qualifiers.

Well done anyway.

Well played it's not your fault that you played well and the rest never an all to common reaction but stems from a few spoiling it by protecting handicaps and cleaning up prizes.
Laugh it off and enjoy!

the mantra is

"some days I get to wear the hat and ride the pony - tomorrow's another day"

the real issue is that it's takes decades to understand that you can't avoid it = it's peoples way to rationalise the fact that they were beaten!

personally I find bigslice's comment earlier hugely indicative

finally I would always back the regular club golfer in a corporate day; you are generally playing of forward tees and 40 pts may well represent a normal result.

I really don't get why they call you a bandit!? It can happen to anyone to have a great day. It's not because you shoot higher than 36 stb that you should be called a "bandit"? That's litterally the right and fair way to have an accurate hcp: to play in comps! Seriously, there was no banditism there that day, but only jealousy...
It's sad a golf game can turn into such a thing.

you were 4 shots better than handicap. thats not exactly out of the question for any golfer of any handicap.

i also dont see why the rest were complaining. not one of the rest of the field even played to their handicap. not even one 36pointer. thats just embarrising. you can safely say that the bandit calling was a last ditch attempt to cover up their poor play.

enjoy it pal! :D

You had a plan and it worked. Clearly not a course for driver and too many had their egos with them today and paid the price in lost balls. Smile, be polite and take the prize home and be happy. I'd be trying to get the card to put in though

i know what you mean guys. its just a shame that its human nature to try and drag people down when there doing well. funny how i wasn't a bandit when i shot a 19 round branston

A guy in my society the other week returned 43 points and moaned about getting cut. He's a bandit. You're not.
