I went pole fishing with 5 year olds

Hi all

I went with my son yesterday to a fishing birthday party.... there were 7 kids due to be there and I hadn't fished for around 22 years.

Each child was given a pole (betwen 2-3 metres long) with a fixed piece of line, float and a barbless hook. Bait was a ball of some kind of bread paste that you squashed around the hook.

Needless to say within 10 minutes all the kids had picked up sticks, disappeared into a field and were having fights whilst us dads fished. Around an hour and a half later I'd caught 13 fish one of which I'd estimate at being a 1.5lb common carp.

I had good fun, although I dont have time for another hobby....or do I.

I've since learned that these small poles are called "whips", a far cry from what I knew of fishing as a teenager and so so simple to do. I've had a quick look and I think I could get geared up for a similar setup for around £50......thats pretty damn cheap!

That's pretty cheap, I remember 10 - 15 years ago an average pole would be at least £50 with out the hook length elastic etc!
 
Great way of getting kids fishing...even for 10 minutes!! I did lots as a kid....loved it for the same reason as I love golf....it takes you to some wonderful places.

Shame it's all gone carp-carp-carp now.... in commercial ponds. But it is accessible and fun, and they are guaranteed to catch something

I must admit that was all the talk, but I got a good mix of roach, rudd and breame as well as Carp.

I think the thing I was most impressed with was the cost. The price was is £7 for a junior or £10 for an adult, then and additional £7.50 for the hire of a rod, net and a tub of bait. So all in it is £15 for a days fishing.....not bad for a one off or to give it a try.

I take my son to a town center river(in season), we sit on the quay wall with 1/2 a pint of red maggots and a really nice whip i bought him for ~£35.

We catch skimmer bream, roach and perch and the odd eel for as long as his interest holds.

He still talks about 'the big eel' that broke him up at the net a couple of years ago.
 
I am of an age where our parents let us go fishing on our own as children. My brother and I never told them I nearly drowned one day after fishing from a pipe line across the river and falling in. We were both scared that would stop us from going.

I'm 37 but remember well strapping my rods and rests to the top tube of my bike and disappearing off for the day with my mate.

We too used to climb out on a pipe to a brick outlet further into the lake and fish from there. Really not sure those few metres made any real difference!

Only other mishap I had was when tying a barbed hook onto my line, my mate accidentally kicked my rod and the hook went into the tip of my finger and came out of the side. I went to hospital where they sprayed it with a freezing spray, got some pliers and then wiggled it free. Firstly the spray only numbed the outside of the finger and secondly I remember nearly passing out whilst my mum held my head over a polystyrene bucket incase I puked. Those were the days!

me too, and night fishing, just a group of 12 year olds.... cant see that happening now. My sister still drives my 18 year old nephew to school!
 
I used to love fishing as a teenager, me and my mates got out as often as we could.
We eventually moved on to Carp fishing, out all weekend..camping, drinking and generally larking about. We drifted away from it at about 17 as you do..

Fishing is a strange thing, it gets under your skin..Its never left me. I’ll get back into it one day.
 
Imurg and I and a couple of mates used to cycle to the lock cut at Marlow where it was free fishing, pretty decent and great for pike in the winter.

Still go occasionally but rather than worm drowning. I tend to “Flay” Fish for trout.

When I retire in 10 years I might get back into it more
 
Long before golf fishing was a significant part of my life. Matches every week, team events, winter leagues, national championships, was mad keen.

A few house moves saw me relocate away from my fishing mates and gradually did less and less, though I too dabbled with carp fishing for a while, but was never committed enough. Then I had most of my gear stolen from our garage and only replaced the match and barbel gear.

Am still an angler, but now a week on the Severn after barbel and a few trips at other times, Favour natural venues than the so called commercial carp puddles. Plan to retire in a couple years so aim to devote more time to fishing then, as well as playing more golf. Like has been said above, its always in your blood once you have been bitten!!
 
I used to like to get my tackle out and see what bites but alas time is so precious now that I don't have the opportunity. I can see myself getting back involved when the rugrats have grown up though.
 
as Steve Jay I was into the match scene teams and opens ,did quite well winning a fair few along the way. have practically stopped fishing now as the golf bug has bitten ,but im getting the urge to wet a line again sometime soon.

I'm a member of a beautiful lake in Sussex. £80.00 membership a year, and then you pay per session. I go every Tuesday and am out on a 24hr session next Monday night. Can't wait.
Off to France for a week under canvas in July with my daughter Lydia. Wonderful father/daughter bonding time. Nothing better than waking up at dawn on a nice, quiet lake miles from anywhere. Hopefully she'll beat her personal best.
