Journeyman Pro
For the last God knows how many years I have suffered with a nasty slice especially off the tee and with my long irons, I had lessons with a few different pro's but none of them were able to diagnose the problem so weren't able to fix me. Decided to have a lesson with the new pro at my golf club last year, bugger me he had me hitting the ball right to left within 10 minutes...he knew exactly what my problem was (coming over the top on an out to in swing path) and gave me a few drills to get me hitting it the opposite way.
Try as I might I just couldn't shift the left to right ball flight when out on the course, doing it in front of the pro on the range was fairly straight forward but out on the course I was struggling, I went through a period where I was able to control the fade a bit, when I say "control" I mean, it was less erratic but eventually it came back and in some cases worse than ever.
So, after 4 months out of action with a neck injury and finally being given the all clear to get back out on the course I thought I'd get out today while the weather was nice to make up for lost time. Couldn't find anyone to play with, so geared up, filled the juice bottle and headed out on my lonesome.
As you can imagine over the last 4 months of sitting around watching golf on the telly, I have had plenty of time to try and piece together a swing in my head, obviously, easier to do this in your head! I have thought long and hard about what my pro was telling me on the range, watching pro's on telly and imagining my swing in my head. Well, it's helped! Today everything clicked, it finally twigged what my pro has been banging on at me about while I was plodding around the course on my jack jones. Out of all the shots I hit today, one, just ONE had a left to right flight path, everything else was straight or with a touch of draw with the exception of my tee shot on the 7th when, to make sure I knew what I was doing, I purposely tried to hook one.......it HOOKED......straight into the trees.
Finally I feel like I know how to hit a golf ball and feel pretty confident in getting my handicap down to the mid/low teens this season. What also put a big smile on my face today was my short game, chipping to tap in distance and getting distances bang on and sticking the ball pin high.........I was so happy I even told the wife I loved her when I got home!
Now all that has been said I'll go out next time hit a slice every shot and feel like drowning myself in the water on the 17th.
