• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was...

This might just be me, but I don't like seeing lots of signs on a golf course. It's ugly. I don't like string around the greens either (which my course suffers from).

Once a sign goes up, it takes any personal responsibility away. I can do this, because there is no sign saying I can't.

I went down to the club last night to try to exercise the daemons of my recent rounds. I knew there was work going on on the greens and that some of them would be on temps but I wasn't bothered about that as I was more worried about my ball striking.

I started on the back nine where all the greens were mid treatment (slitting, sanding and seeding) so out of play but when I got the the front nine some of the greens were back in play and what I saw amazed me - unrepaired pitch marks everywhere. I know repairing pitch marks is a problem and it frustrates the hell out of me but our greens have received a lot of criticism over the last year so I would have thought, as I would exect any resonable person would, that if you see the groundstaff out working on them, that you could find it in yourself not to leave dirty great pitch marks in them? I didn't bother putting on the greens as I didn't see what benefit I would get it with them being so fresh from their treatment but instead spent a minute or two repairing pitchmarks.

I don't understand why people don't repair pitchmarks anyway but if you see someone trying to improve your course, wouldn't you be encouraged to do your bit? It only takes a few seconds after all.

:sbox:

On the plus side you were able to watch over your partners swing and go away happy in the knowledge all is tickety boo and that for the moment at least we are in a good position for our assault at the Jubilee Cup on Monday. I just hope the repaired greens don't turn it into some form of lottery. You are playing well, my ball striking is getting better - things are looking good!!

I blame a lot (but not all) of pitchmarks on trolleys.
People hit the green with their approach shot making a pitchmark on the front part of the green. They then wheel their trolley to the back left/right of the green heading for the next tee then walk to their ball and putt out. They never go near their PM
Golfers who carry will walk up the green pausing to repair their PM on the way to their ball. Repair it and carry on up the green to mark their ball
I walk up the green and repair a couple on the way. I hit a high bal so unless its baking hot, always look for my marks.

Ever carefully repaired pitchmarks for four or five holes then had trouble fini.g it in one of your dozens of pockets?
So you ask to borrow one from others in your group.
"it's in my bag" they reply.

So what have you been using up until now?? !!

I suspect many golfers do't even have one in their bag

I knew you were playing well but after my 92 in the medal and subsequent 20 points on Saturday I'd hardly say my form was great. Still, there were little signs of improvement last night so we'll see what Saturday brings

Played Wychwood Park recently and they have these signs dotted about:

To me, if you have signs like this dotteed about the course, you course has a problem with unrepaired pitch marks.

I repair my pitchmarks, as like Fragger, I get a little kick out of it. If I see another mark near mine that has been left, I'll repair it while I'm waiting to putt.

Theres been instances where I've repaired 3 or 4 a time.

People at my track seem to think it's OK to leave a pitchmark in the fringe of the green so long was the ball is on it .........****ers!!

Strange sign that , if everyone replace their own , there wouldndt be a plus one would there ?
if im in a group & someone makes a PM & doesnt repair it il either ask them , did you see where mine pitched i wana repair it , or comment something like , i see some muppets in front of us are not repairing pitch marks .. mind you there have been a few who stil didnt get the hint , even then

I always repair mine and 1 or 2 that i see too, i was having a game the other week and as there was nobody behind me at the 9th (9 hole course) i decided to have a 20 minute putting session and repair a few PM's too, well after about 15 repairs it still looke like an aeriel view of no mans land. There are many golfer's out there who will never repair a PM.

Maybe on first tee, as well as telling your group what ball you are playing, you should also show them your repair fork!
I left my fave fork in other jacket this week....convinced that's why I lost my match.
It's my lucky talisman...

Come on guys , why bother repairing your pitchmark ? As far as I can tell there are loads of blokes who'll be along in a minute to do it for you anyhow. And lets not forget that if its a comp then giving the blokes behind you a little extra to think about could move you up the scoreboard and into the money.

i know i keep banging on about how much i love strabanes greens (not my cousrse BTW) but not only are they a joy to putt on but their members deserve a round of applause for keeping them pitchmark free. they are that well kept that a single pitchmark stands out like a sore thumb. i wish to god foyle could stay in the same nick.

im the same as others on here. do my own and any others that are close to me.

i was complaning about the divots on our fairways a couple of weeks ago but they were in great nick yesterday. well done greenstaff and fellow memembers. lets keep it that way!

I'm in the same boat as a few others. I love repairing a pitchmark or two, especially if it's my own. If i've hit the green from 150-180 and left a beautiful ball-deep (snigger) pitch mark, i'm over the moon. Usually takes my mind off how far from the pin i've actually planted it too.

Maybe a silly question, but how many of us repair a pitchmark correctly? I see so many pushing the turf up from underneath...
