i have a few unusual questions to ask

+1 on sticking with being yourself, your history is not relevant at all. It doesn't seem like it will give you any advantage. The best advice will probably come from the golf union, I would love to hear their advice as I expect them to have been through this before many times.

Go lady all the way. If that's how you live then that's what you are. No need to tell anybody if you don't want to. If you don't normally tell people then no need to star now is there?
 
Brave stuff to be so open on here. I'd go with what you feel comfiest doing. It's your life and down to you to lead it as you see fit. Bash has filled you in with the legal side (being an officer of the law like what he is - no wonder he can retire so bloody early to play golf) and I'm sure if it comes up there wil be difficult issues to deal with but go for it. I'd worry more about my golf than whether I was looking and acting the part and worrying about no female back history.

The biggest issue may come if you join and then it comes out and how the club reacts. If they kick you out then you'd clearly have a legal case but would you have the stomach for the fight and inevitable press which will open your lifestyle choice out to the wider audience and is it worth it for a game of golf. Not trying to be negative but looking at it pragmatically. Personally I'd stick you off the reds and tell you to go and have fun but we all know some golf clubs don't live in enlightened times
 
Hi Louise - another lady here, and I would say be yourself. Some of our lady members can drive it as far as the men, but they aren't necessarily the ones with the lowest handicaps in the section, as others have said, accuracy and the short game can count for a lot.

I hope that you find a club which is welcoming to you. I know that sometimes the ladies sections can be a bit hard to break in to initially, so give it a chance. Handicaps are a great leveller, so once you've put your cards in you won't really be playing with an advantage anyway.

Surely your gender (genetic or appearance) is a side issue - what is critical is your handicap being accurate when playing from the women's tees.

If you were playing off a previous male handicap and then get bumped forward on a good number of the tee beds then that's going to be a distinct advantage but since you have been living as a women for 8 years I suspect your handicap must be a pretty good reflection of your game.

As some have said, I think there can be groups in the ladies sections so perhaps keep the gender issues simple - you are a woman playing womens' golf in a womens' club - simples :)
 
IIRC this has aleady been tested at Ladies Professional level in the past couple of years, although i cant recall if EGU, Europe or the states. might be worth a bit more of a google search needed.
Again IIRC it was decided that the lady in question was perfectly entitled to compete on the ladies tour.

Well thanks again for everyone who has posted, my feelings of being myself and not mentioning my past have been reinforced. To be honest I am quite surprised that I havent read any negative posts, not that I am complaining, but sometimes its good to see opposing views.

Hello Louise... Welcome... We live in enlightened times...

Two 'chaps' I know from a previous interest 'crossed over'... I'd be lying if I said no one batted an eyelid but it was amazing how quick the 'situation' for them was accepted... They may have felt uncomfortable at times but it wasn't due to any ill will shown them from their peers...

I think this is not the "forum" for negative views but I think if someone has any objections they are probably respecting that a golf forum is not a place for it.
 
Welcome to the forum and I can understand your trepadation at both posting on here and with the potential new club dilemma, my thought follow the general comments that the handicap system will prevail should there be any issues over strength / performance.

Learn to make flapjack.....if the conversation starts to get awkward fish some out of the bag, that will shut 'em up! :)

Heck! We accept and play with Smiffy no problem and he is always playing (his second) off the red tee ;)

The problem you will have is if you start winning things , itl be because of your gender & nothing to do with your golfing ability , most golfers dont ever know the many social or also ran fellow members but start winning & the daggers get drawn ,
To answer your question honestly i do think you would face problems in my club , mainly because even tho we have some lovely lady members & some very good golfers the running & the back bone of our ladys side of the club is run by your stereotypical stuff shirted , buter wouldnt melt , why does she talk like she has a golf ball in her mouth type old dears who feared the buying of the coloured tv for the clubhouse in its day was too much change ..
But i guess you have faced bigger hurdles than people like this in the last few years so you will handle it in your stride , good luck

p.s at forum meets all ye women can play off the whites ... equality & all that :D
